The goal of a mix is to make the song sound great. That does not necessarily mean every instrument needs to be distinct and clear at all times.

Loud can not be fully appreciated without soft.

That's all for today....

I remember that when using my old four track Portastudio (i.e. before editing became more easily achieved), I would sometimes conceal a duff guitar or keyboard note with a timely snare drum or similar (shock horror!). Sometimes it worked and sometimes it was horribly obvious what I'd done. The point is, there are times when it's not a good thing to have every instrument clearly separated.

And that`s the problem with a lot of modern music, it`s been compressed and limited to death, ending up with a wall of noise, but not in a good Phil Spectre kind of way.

Very true Mac. It would pay some folk to bear in mind the old adage that less is often more.

That's a good tip Gary. Trying to bring up one fader to match another fader level sometimes is just bringing up the volume.
