Hey boys,

It's been a while - new job has eaten up all my recording time!

Speaking of the new job (I'm the Media Coordinator ata college) - my coworker is looking to install a small recording space in what used to be a darkroom. He is looking to get two vocal mics, hopefully at under (or around) $200 apiece. I have some leads (like the MXL2003) but I figured all y'all would have some ideas. Any recommendations?

Also, is any one familiar with the ART MPA Gold 2 Channel Microphone Preamp with Variable Impedance:

One mic in particular I've been looking at (on my coworker's behalf, of course) is Nady RSM-2, which is a ribbon mic.

Any advice on ribbon versus condensor mics for studio recording?

I've had real good experience with the Behringer B2 Pro at about $200 a piece.



A little more expensive is the Rode NT1a which I had on the test bench some time ago. I was impressed.

Gotta second that recommendation on the Rode. I have the NT-1 and the NT-1A and they are definately keepers. I don't think you can buy a quieter mic for the money.

Thanks for the advice on the mic guys! Any thoughts on the tube pre I've provided a link to or alternatives you may have or know about?

I have that model as well and like it in some ways better than my Focusrite Twin Tracks Pro . The tube gain stage is worth the money alone IMO. Of all the pre amps I have , It's my number two choice.

I've sold my coworker on the Rode NT1a and that pre. B&H has the Rode NT1a for under $200, so it didn't take much convicing, particularly considering that it only contributes 5 dB A of crud.

You boys are the best...



PS - I've ordered a Behringer UCA202 analog-USB interface to get stuff from the G onto my PC (for Sound Forge manipulation) and back onto the G (via its optical digital out, perhaps, if I can figure that one out). I got tired of wasting CDR's and having CDRW's glitch out on me.

Anyone have experience with this little box?

yeah i couldn't agree more. i'm jacking my RODE NT1A into a TCHelicon VoiceLive stompbox then SPDIF into O1x

IMPRESSIVE [inexpensive] mic. nevertheless, a quality mic if you're stuck making choices.

won't be long now before wanting to warm signals up with tubes. but that's another topic //smile//
