I was starting a mix with the Yamah AW16G a few days ago. Per standard procedure, I was deciding on pan positions. On one channel, (#6,) although the pan appeared to be set at 4-right, when I played back the mix, it either sounded in the left channel or seemed to "float around" from left to right. None of the other channels had this issue. Other than the panning issue, the track on channel 6 seemed to be just fine. After fiddling with knobs for awhile, (technical term), I finally decided to pan the channel 6 track to around 10-right, just to find out what would happen. Once I did that, the track seemed to be at about 4-Right as I had originally intended, and no longer had the "floating effect". The channel 6 track has a soloist section; another channel has a different soloist. The other channel is working just fine. (My intent with all of this was to have soloists sounding at opposite pan positions, as though there were two performers on different sides of a stage.)
Aside from the weird 4-right setting acting up, the AW16G did just fine. When I played back the entire mix, all was as I had intended. Still, although I know that there is a way to get the pan to float intentionally, I did not see any setting which would have caused this. I would prefer not to avoid channel 6 entirely from here on out. At this point, it seems to be a mystery without much in the way of clues.
