Thanks...I give it a try...

And the midi-synching thing...ez? Any thread to follow?

Of course, this will be infinitely easier if you got the midi-synch thing working.

I tried to look at the Alesis PDF manual download but did couldn't get it to go. Does it have 3 midi ports?

I'm pretty much of a MIDIdiot too but I have a printout somewhere around here from the old forum that I used to hook up my SR16. I'll see if I can dig it up.

Where's Ricky Recordo when you need him? :P

The HR-16 has the following on the back:

Two stero outputs as follows:

Output 1--Left and right 1/4 jacks
Output 2--Left and right 1/4 jacks

Tape in and out jacks(out is also a midi thru)

Midi In and Out

Start and stop jack

Thanks,

BK midiot and G-idiot

Basically you're going to use the G as the master and the HR16 as the slave. Midi-out from the G to the HR16 Midi-in. You have to do a couple things on each machine in order for them to talk to each other.

Here's the HR16 manual if you don't have one.

Not a problem BK. I found my old notes. Here is the part that was helpful to me with my SR16.

Go to the utility page on the G and set (under midi out) MIDI to on, then underneath that set CLK to on, disable MTC and the THRU buttons (if you have trouble here refer to page 150 of the manual)

..on the sr16 press "mdi setup", then press the tempo down to get to the "clock in" page and then press the up or down button (above the "FILL" button to turn on the clock.

You'll have to page thru the HR16 manual to find something that works. What should happen is that the drum machine will start playing immediately upon hitting the 'play' button on the G. I think the default is 120 BPM but that is adjustable in the SONG-->TEMPO screen.

Good luck!

Found my original HR16 manual, but still no success synching...Not sure what I'm doing wrong...When you say that it should start up when I push the play button on the G, do you mean in record mode? Do I need to have a pattern or a song cued up on the HR16?

Thanks,

BK

Yes, you should have your HR16 ready to go, song cued up etc. The only thing it is waiting for is a signal to start to play, which can come from the start button on the drum machine, or in your case the MIDI signal from the G. Assuming that the drum machine is configured correctly.

Now for a comment from MIDIot land where I am a registered citizen: one of my initial problems was that I had the MIDI cables plugged in wrong. I played around with the settings for quite awhile before I figured out what was wrong. I knew that I needed to go AW16G OUT to drum machine IN, but for some brain dead reason I had IN -> IN and OUT -> OUT.

Just thought I would mention that. As I have added to/re-arranged my "studio" I have had more problems with connecting stuff wrong than anything thing else. Now, if it doesn't work, the first thing I do is check the cabling.

Hope that helps
CW

Uncle Bob and all other midiots...

I'm still lost...tried all settings in the midi/utility set up on the drum machine, on and off, with no luck....could it be my G? Or is the HR16 to old?

You should be able to get it going. I had a brief look at the HR16 manual and the HR16 sends and recieves MIDI data so it should work.

Lot of settings in the manual MIDI section. Have you tried this combination? Probably yes, but here goes anyways:
01 Set MIDI Channel = OMNI
02 = OFF
03 = OFF
04 = ?
05 = OFF
06 = OFF
07 Clock Source = MIDI and Internal
08 = OFF
09 Auto start enable = ON
10 = OFF
11 = OFF

OMNI sets the HR16 up to receive on all MIDI channels. So the incoming signal should come in OK. Set the HR 16 up with a song ready to play. When you press play on the G, the HR16 should start.

I came across a book by Craig Anderton: The Complete Guide to the Alesis HR-16 and MMT-8. He now has a forum on the Harmony Central site. You could try a post to his forum. After writing a book about the HR-16 he should be able to help you .... if you get a reply. Doesn't seem to be much on the forum about vintage stuff.

Good luck

Colin

Here is an excerpt from a document that indicates that MIDI start works on the HR-16:

02H RECORD BUTTON

This command is used to "press" or "release" the RECORD button. It will affect whether the HR-16 will go into play or record when it receives a MIDI START command. It does not affect what will happen when pressing play from the front panel.

0000000xB x: 0=Record released, 1=Record pressed

Good call on the Craig Anderton forum. It's a pretty high-volume forum so chances are you'll get a response from somebody, if not from Craig himself.

Also, Home Recording has an Alesis-specific forum that you might want to try.

The standard midi com channel is 10 for drums. Or set the both units to all call or omni and that might work.

Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for all the help...I'm in!!!

BK

Couple more questions:

The unit I have has two outputs(both left and right)...
Do I have to use both outputs to record the drums
in stereo??

Are there any advantages to recording drums to a paired track?

Thx...

True stereo ? Yes I believe so,

I can think of more disadvantages than advanatges. It might depend on where the drums are in the stereo field. You might want to tweak one channel different than the other. I'm not sure the paired tracks allow full EQ , Dynamic , and effect control between them. I use my 4416 almost exclusively now and I don't miss the paired tracks at all. (Pairing is an option on the 4416). In other words on the 16G I would pair stuff like synth channels. Drums would almost always be on separate tracks.

Others might not agree with this.

I have an SR-16. The disadvantage of putting a drum track to a stereo track is that the paired tracks are panned hard left and hard right. The stereo field of the SR-16 is quite explicit, so I like to put both left and right to mono tracks so I can move the panning a little bit away from hard left and right.

Robbie, push the PAN/BAL button, and under PAN, cursor over to the pan pots and use the jog wheel to pan your stereo pairs any way you want. If you use the pan knob, then only one side will move.
