Hi All,

I must be doing something wrong, or something is not quite right with my G.

When I play my Motif ES through my monitors direct, the sound is incredible and very clean, no worries. But, when I go into the G first and listen through my monitors I get a horrible scratchy sound from the left speaker - even if I swap the speakers around, change cables, use very low levels, whatever!

When I record I get the noise when tracking, but when I play back what I have recorded there is no noise!!!

I have initiated a clean scene to cancel any effects or eq and I have tried all sorts of level combinations on the Motif and the G and the monitors.

I even lowered the output gain from the Motif.

I am beginning to think I have a faulty G. Thing is I live so far from any Yamaha service people and I am tired of these studio glitches that are stopping me from enjoying my recording.

I had the same issue when I used a PSR and different monitors.

Any ideas?

Kahuna , are you feeding the Motif into the G's inputs 3 and 4? The Mo's outputs are unbalanced so use a short cords. Don't route the signal cords anywhere near the power supply cables. Set the volume about 3/4 to 7/8 on the Mo. Some patches will distort out of the Mo if turned all the way up.Set the recorder up so that channel 3 is panned full left and 4 is panned full right. Without an external pre amp you are going to have to turn the input gain on the G to about 10 to 12 o'clock. Make sure the channels are initialized . No scenes (or use 00 and set the pans like stated above). You may be clipping the monitor side of things. The input knobs control the gain of the recorded signal , the faders (while recording) control the monitor volume. Try turning those down some and raising the master monitor volume knob if you need it louder while you record.

Thanks Sky Man

I understand the need for short unbalanced cables out of the Motif, and what I am using are ten footers, but when I play through the monitors direct using these same cables there is no scratchy noise. The noise is intermittent and occurs even at low levels.

The reason I suspect it may be a G issue is because the distortion is ALWAYS in the left channel - after umpteen cable/speaker swaps.

I will try short cable runs and move them away from the power supplies - I am getting a rack delivered this week so a major rearrangement is on the cards.

Speaking of preamps, I believe it might be worth a try to go from the Motif into a pre and then into the G.

I have set the scenes to 00 but the pan L R could be worth trying.

I appreciate your suggestions.

K

Wow, thats a puzzler kahuna.

hmmmmmmm....... are your cables going across or near any other digital devices or a preamp?

have you tried plugging into different inputs on the g? and , obviously if you did you are still getting the problem so......

are you peaking any of your inputs , or the master section, while tracking?

those are all the obvious questions.....
damn, I cant think of any other explanations right now. Ill sleep on it.

Thanks MP

I am just about to unplug everything and start over again. It's gotta be either some dumb setting I am overlooking or maybe there is a fault in the circuits deep in the belly of the G?

I actually changed my monitors because of this noise; glad I did, actually, even though I paid a bunch for my Event ASP8's over me Wharfedale's. The Events are really nice sounding - but this darned noise just bugs the crap out of me! At least I know it's not a monitor fault.

There should be a lesson in this, Ku. I can't tell you how many times I had trouble and was certain it was the G. Nope, it was me. Here too you replaced your monitors convinced that it was the source of trouble (but it was a great excuse to upgrade to better equipment! I'm gonna add that to my list of "But, Honey" GAS lines. :D ).

I think to simplify this DC means change one thing, if that doesn't cure the problem put it back as it was and then change something else.
DC can we write in English please

This is really getting to me.

I tried all the obvious fixes - one at a time - and the damned noise keeps happening!

As soon as I hook up my keys to the Events direct, I can play as loud as I can stand and the sound is as clean as a newborn's bum.

I am still searching for that elusive sweet G spot!

kahuna, can you play anything else from the g and have it sound nice and clear and loud out of the left speaker ?

Yes, I can.

The problem seems to be restricted to my synth. I don't recall it occurring when I crank up my guitar or vocals.

I am in the middle of rearranging everything and I am going real slow as I have managed to hurt my back; may be a result of leaning over the synth to get to the G behind it, hence the major rearrangement.

When I get things working again I will do more testing.

One of these days I will be able to concentrate on making music rather that farting around with my gear!

Time for dinner...

Didi you try different inputs? Say 4/5 or 6/8

I am thinking ( actually semi-educated guess with a drop of logic) that there has to be some setting within the G.

Assuming the same output from the Mo goes into the monitor fine but distorts on left channel only going through the G even with different pairs of channels (ie 3/4 5/6).

I still get confused on the multiple screens of signal routing options but;

1. What user defined variables inside the G could affect the left channel only for the stereo out?

2. What is different about the other input signals that do not distort?

Impedance differences come to mind but the Mo should output the same impedance right and left.... You may want to double check your input select chain comparing 3 and 4.

If 3 is going to the left and 4 is going to the right try pairing 3 and 4 and see if the noise appears in the right channel now since channel 3's input signal path should be duplicated in channel 4 now.

If pairing 3 and 4 produces the problem in both channels now then there is something in the signal routing of channel 3.

If pairing 3 and 4 does not procuce the problem in the right/channel four and the problem continues in other channels but left output only then perhaps the problem is in the left monitor (or stereo out) output jack going to the left monitor.

Another thing to check is to make sure the outputs are from the L (mon) and the right and not the assignables from the MO. I still think it's on the monitor side of the G too Scooter. He says the recorded signal plays back OK. Gotta be in the monitor setuo in the G.

My new setup is working very well. I now have the main monitors pointed away from where I play. I do this so I can sometimes track guitars and listen through the speakers rather than the headphones. It gives a spacey , airy effect.

Because of the new layout I don't hear the distortion as much as I did, but it is still there. I always check the channel view to make sure the effects are off and the levels are not clipping.

I might have a sparkie test the impedance of the monitor jacks just to see if there is not some problem.

I still think it is something in the G.

Later...

Have you recalled the initial scene under the [scene] menu ?

If you mean "00" then yes. When you recall Scene 00 and when you check your channel view, are all the effects off except the EQ? When I look at EQ settings they are completely flat, so I don't turn EQ off.

I just checked and when I look at the input view of X input channel the EQ is off. However, when I go to View>channel view input X the EQ is on at a flat setting. Seems like six of one and half a dozen of 'tuther.

If this was a problem I would hear it in both outputs. Maybe?

Is there a reason the sound should be degraded when monitored through the G compared to when my Motif is directly connected to the monitors?

Maybe I expect too much? I want clean sound when I track.....

Kahuna..........

Stop , if you can understand the voice and performance mode of a Yamaha motif , you can understand signal routing in a G.

JM posted this yesterday. Please read and begin anew patching your Mo through the G

Take this tutorial you will thank us later
