Was able to see one of the top drummers in the world, the thunder from down under, Virgil Donati. It was in a very small venue, and where I saw Adrian Belew.
He and his band were simply amazing. The precision, time signatures and feel of the playing was fantastic. He did a feature of some Alan Holdsworth music which was a highlight for me.
What was totally whacked was that there were like 25 people there. IN fact he mentioned that it was small but enthusiastic. For me, I was embarrassed for it. It was almost awkward if that makes sense? granted, not crowded and I was able to closely watch his technique, so that was cool. Just felt bad for he and his band.
I contacted the promoter to ask if he even promoted this thing, and if so, then there are a bucnh of idiot drummers in Louisville for missing this. He replied that it was hit or miss with these shows and that the venue did little advertising of it. Cool he replied.
Anyway, check out his new album Ruination.
