If you are recording two separate instruments or vocals onto a paired track and want to individually adjust the pan for each track, here's how:

1. Depress the pan trim knob.

2. Select the paired track input button you wish to adjust.

3. Either press the track button again or the cursor keys to switch between the pair.

4. Instead of rotating the pan trim knob, rotate the jog wheel. It gives you individual control over each track of the pair.

An interesting question came up in another thread concerning the best way to pan the stereo tracks. I haven't found the answer located in the search engine or the manual. So I messed around on the G until I got lucky.
If you are recording two seperate intruments or vocals onto a paired track and want to individually adjust the pan for each track, here's how:
1. Depress the pan trim knob.
2. Select the paired track input button you wish to adjust.
3. Either press the track button again or the cursor keys to switch between the pair.
4. Instead of rotating the pan trim knob, rotate the jog wheel. It gives you individual control over each track of the pair.

Maybe everyone knew this but me. But just in case, that's how it's done.

Thanks for the tip. I can now comp (and normalise the volume on) my lead vocal part takes to tracks 9 and 10 alternately (so the parts can be bounced a line/lines at a time) and still have them panned to centre. Previously I was bouncing down to a single track and had to drop in to get the joins seamless.

I should explain that, because of my inability to do a full vocal takes without a lot of bum notes, I usually record a line at a time on sequential tracks eg 1,2,3,4,5,6 and then back around again for the whole song (after I have done a rough stereo bounce of the backing so I can cue to it)

Now for the niggle. After I have panned both tracks to centre and recorded, when I cancel record settings and go back to practice my next bounce, I find when I go back into record (bounce) the track panning has defaulted to L/R again. Very disconcerting on the next take if I forget to check and repan. Anyone solved this????

Thanks Brassman. I read that thread long ago and have noticed what can occur when spinning that wheel.

For those who may be less inclined to read (and just in case the original G site goes down for the count) Brassman wrote:

"Wow, I just found something quite interesting about panning the stereo tracks.

There are (at least) two ways to adjust pan: turning the Pan knob, and using the data wheel.

You can set either channel's pan to full left or right using the data wheel. No problem there, it's intuitive.

Different things happen when turning the Pan knob. For example, assume for a moment that the pan for tracks 9 and 10 are both centered, and you select track 9 to adjust its pan. You can turn the Pan knob CCW and change track 9's pan until it reaches L16 (all the way). Now, if you keep turning it CCW, track *10*'s pan begins moving to toward L. Then, turning the knob CW continues changing track 10's pan until it reaches R16, and continued CW turns goes back to changing track 9's pan! This means that you change a paired track's pan without it being selected! Also, it appears that *when using the Pan knob*, you can't make an odd track's pan "cross over" an even track's pan, e.g., track 9 = R2 and track 10 = L5 is not allowed. However, you can set it like that using the data wheel.

In short, when using the Pan knob instead of the data wheel, pan adjustment jumps the other track of a stereo pair when a limit is reached (L16 for odd tracks, R16 for even tracks), and when the pan value would "cross" the pan values between odd & even numbered tracks of a pair.

I think I got the above actions right.

I'll be using the data wheel for panning from now on."

Further on the panning paired tracks issue. You can adjust them individually by clicking on each one in turn and using the wheel as above.

I was using this to centre both tracks. I have just discovered that it is easier than this. Just as on unpaired tracks you can centre them by pressing Enter, for paired tracks, you click on each track number eg 9 and press the Enter button then 10 and press the Enter button and both are centered.

I ran into this recently. The danger is you forget about it when in fact you want them panned hard L and R.
