Hi guys,

The forum was offline for almost a week. We were out of bandwidth. I mailed the hoster but they say they never got the mail. I just sent a reminder to which they responded quickly. The problem is not solved because it's not clear what caused it. For now we were granted a few drops of extra bandwidth so we can at least log in.

I saw there was some use of the file exchange section but that could not have been a problem (about 150 MB of data exchange, a very small fraction of what we can afford).

In the log files I could see there is a sudden spike in data usage. I'm going to try to find out what it was. Keep you postend.

cheers
R

Thanks again Robbie. A very, very small percentage of the world population is aware of, and appreciative of your efforts, But ... 100% of those populating this site know, and are very very appreciative!!

Happy holidays to all. :-)

I'm considering taking down all parts of the site except for the forum itself. I could upload all files of the "docs page" to the forum so those files can only be accessed when logged in. Also the webbased mp3 players is hardly used but it may allow search engines to generate a lot of traffic.

Any ideas? Please share. Thanks!

A lot of traffic seems to come from IPaddresses in the range 46.229.168.* so I blocked those. Let's see what happens.

It looks like the extra bandwidth we were given by the hoster is not going to be enough to get to 2017-1-1. So, before the end of the year we'll probably get the same message.

Do what is needed, I'd say. the forum is a great archive for the few who find themselves with a new "old" AW. I'd hate to lose threads that may be of use. Surprising how often i go searching for something. geno left us with many pearls.

Geno.

I still miss him a lot. He springs to mind every now and again and I'm grateful for that.

Hi Robbie -- First, Merry Christmas and Second....Happy New Year! I tried to log in as well, and saw the 'bandwidth exceeded' message each time. I'm happy to see that you're back online. I scaled down site ( forum and documents ) would be all I need, if that's what's required to reduce the amount of bandwidth the site uses.

Like others, I'd probably be lost without the forum. Heck, I have to go back and check my own posts and threads to figure out things I've forgotten because I don't use my gear often now. The forum, is a life-saver when it comes to finding answers and quickly getting back up to speed.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all the Forum members!

Did I mention how much snow we're getting in Ottawa this year? It hasn't stopped it seems since late November but it looks pretty!

Yay, the site is back up!! =D> I was beginning to worry it was permanently down. Haven't used my AW in a long time, but I still check this site everyday. Thumbs up to Robbie for keeping it going!

Happy New Year to all!

Good to see the site returned. My post on this thread failed to stick, then the site was unavailable again. So I'll say it again: Robbie, thanks for keeping the forum going - an invaluable resource for those of us among the cognoscenti who consult it when all manual reading fails.

Cheers, Randy

Hi guys, thanks for the encouragements. :-)

No problem at all. It'll generate some data traffic but those amounts are not the problem. There are other things going on. Certain php files are hit so many times it's really creating a problem. I've banned the IP range that created that problem but I fear it doesn't really help much.

If ever there will be a time where dijonstock stops, I'll make sure I spread the word first :) . So, if anything is wrong I'll probably work for a solution (or try to find the time to work on one... career and study is not a recommendable combination.... when they're both full time... )

Happy New Year all! Glad to see the site back on line. Today is my first chance to visit since the new year. Workload is extreme. Only have a few seconds while waiting for a vendor to return my call.

I can not imagine why we would ever exceed bandwidth. Nothing is really being uploaded except some small files. If you want to remove those completely, set up a free site like SoundCloud and call it Dijonstock. It's easy to upload as long as you give out the user and password. Maybe put that info in the file section or someplace. Not sure if we can adjust that site to send an alert or perhaps once posted, the user can link it here. That's one idea.

The only thing I can think of are spammers, but then again, they just link their trash. With the minimal traffic these days, I sure don't know what's up. Doesn't bandwidth reset each month?

With all that said, I am working on my annual birthday song. This year I bit off more than I can chew, but I found a way through the magic of multi tracking to try and pull it off. Vocals are going to be a serious challenge. Once I get all the instruments done, then I'll start focusing on vocals. Got a month and a half left before I make the presentation.

Happy New Year to you too Ron!

The uploaded files are not the problem. Some automated processes access a number of files on the server many times an hour. Could be search engine crawlers or bots that look for vulnerabilities. So, by all means, use the file exchange section. I have to find a solution for the real problem. I excluded a range of IP's on the forum, but I think I should do that server-based or at least site-based.

Usually we use somewhere between 20 GB and 30 GB per month of data. The threshold is 40 GB. If it would have been 50 GB we never ever would have considered anything a problem. It's no unusual to be visited by search engine crawlers on a regular basis.

Let's assume we use 30 GB per month, it's now the 5th of January so we should now have used about 5 GB. Let me check what it is now. If it is less than that, I'll leave it as it is. If it's more I'll start searching.
