Congrats on the new arrival! It sounds kind of like one of those stories where a woman has a child when she didn't even realize she was pregnant ... and then ..... a new bundle of joy. I hope it doesn't keep you up too late. Time to read up on midi!! Maybe this baby was delivered with help from a midi-wife??

Thanks Robbie, both are doing fine, spent half an hour bringing up wind then spent two hours setting up the midi to pc and finally got everything set up.
I must say it sends more midi info than my AW1600 does, faders, pan, eq, transport, solo, really surprised.

yes, the 4416 is the most "complete" system of the AW series. The 2400 is perhaps somewhat more user friendly, has a bigger drive, multiple stero tracks etc. but some features available on the 4416 were not passed down to the 2400.

For e.g. - the AUX / EFF buses are controlled by the faders on 4416. On the 2400 it is a software screen where AUX are controlled. -- the 4416 had two slots for cards the 2400 has only one. (if your machine does not have a WAVS y56k card installed you should look for one) -- the 4416 can be navigated with the help of a mouse etc.

If a 4416 ever falls in my lap, I would for sure accept it.

One down side is there is no USB connectivity.

You will be able to refine this list i'm sure, after you build a few projects.

Well actually Byron I'm not going to use the hardrive or anything else really.
I bought it to use as a controller using a midi to usb cable which is what I've been doing with the aw1600.
As far as Waves I use their vsts which sound really good.
The thing that does jump out a little to me is the extra machine noise. Is that the hardrive or a fan or something else?
I was thinking that if it's the hd I will just put a new one in it.

Can't advise on the noise issue. I have never worked with a 4416. I just know them from encountering issues with the 2400 > researching> only to find the 4416 could have done what i wanted, while the 2400 was limited in regard (Aux > faders for one e.g.)

So, how do you have the thing rigged/patched? Can you use the 4416 as a control surface to assign/control Aux buses on your computer?

Perhaps i should be thinking in that direction for myself???

So you track to the computer? the AW is a dedicated control surface in your setup? No tracking to the AW? straight through to the computer?

Yes I track straight to the laptop using this interface, which sounds excellent.

I only use all the controls on the aw4416 that send midi from the 5 pin din to the laptop, which is really quite a lot.
Every song I record I save as scenes on the desk, so when I call up any particular track on the laptop everything is in place on the desk, also if I change the position of any faders on the laptop it changes the desk faders, the midi goes both ways.
I`m looking at fitting an external IDE to SD Card converter, I know someone that`s done it and it works great, if only to get rid of the noise from the hardrive and fan, it`s not that loud but because I`ve been used to the near silent AW1600 I notice it more.
I`ll look into the AUX Bus thing Byron.

Just an update, I done some research and it turns out the irritating noise from the AW4416 machines does`nt come from the hard drive or the main fan at the back which I first thought, it comes from the fan built into the CD Drive.
After Googling I come across this site that explains how to do it properly, and as it says has actually been approved by Yamaha.
Now obviously this is no good to those of you that are burning to the CD, but if like me, you are recording to a pc, laptop or whatever, and have no use for the CD drive, this is an excellent fix and after trying it out on my machine, the desk is now practically silent.
Some people have even built in a switch to turn off the fan until they need it for burning.

hello tmac,
congrats on the aw4416 (and the grandbaby!)... you will find the console rock solid and very flexible for your needs ...
i dig that your using the midi for commands, i hadn't thought of that angle ..
also am interested in the sd card conversion ... do you have a proven link ?
who is your "someone who's done it" ?, i would like to chat with them ... or get a material list for the conversion

There are a lot more 4416s out there than 1600s.

If you had tp choose, which would you go for ?

Oscar there are`nt many I`ve seen in the U.K. so I know I got lucky because it`s in near perfect condition cosmetically and mechanically, as I say it was just the extra noise that comes from the 4416``s fan that drove me nuts so I`m glad I got the info on how to stop that.
Now to choose between the two ? for me the 4416 is a win win because there seems to be more midi sent from it than the 1600, though why that would be the case I don`t know, probably is`nt but seems to be so, and also more faders which is handy for me because I use the extra to control the bus faders on in my software.
As for the sound of the machines I would`nt know.

If you are not imprinting data to the AW. but rather inputting to the computer. the i think the 4416 is the way to go, as a control surface with longer , motorized faders and easy access to the layers to which the faders may be assigned control.

But, If you are tracking to the Aw and then either mixing within the AW environment or moving tracks to a computer platform for mixing, then the 1600's USB is a big, big plus.

yes.. indeed ... yamaha dropped the ball on this one issue with the 4416 ... no usb included
my work around this problem is:
fill the hd in the aw with projects
remove the hdd (remove slide in hdd tr)
remove ide hdd and place into a separate ide drive caddy with usb (3 minutes ?)
hook up to the desktop for quick access via awextract
it does take a little effort to do the steps but way easier than burning cds ...
i keep 3 slide in trays (with various sized spare hdds) on reserve but now i am thinking hard about changing one sled into a cf/sd card to see if it really works ...

There is possibly another way.
Take the leads from the stereo out straight to a usb interface that'sconnected to the pc.
So what ever is being recorded on the desk will also go to the pc.
Will that not work ??

hello tmac,

yes, it will work but only will record the stereo mix ...
i use the stereo outs (of the aw4416) to a stereo 1/8" plug and go directly into the soundcard ... it will record mixed down stereo tracks, as well as, what ever is being played on the console inputs ...
but ...
in order to have all recorded tracks accessable on the pc, you have to burn discs ...(?) or remove the hhd as described ....
i find it much easier to do all mixing sessions in the box(automix really helps to assemble the mix parts), then make a final stereo mixdown (itb with y56k card for final coloring ) and send that final mix to the pc for duplication and assembly of the final album ... and just wait for the $$$ to come flying in ... (i am still waiting for that last part to come to fruitition...)

thats just how i do it, there are many other ways to accomplish the final result with the 4416

i have had both 4416 consoles cascaded but rarely need more than 16 channels at a time, when i do need more, i will just use the tascam sx1 ( more time to reset the console and such but basically the same style of workflow with 32 inputs and a larger hdd, video screen, footprint )
