As people here know I use 2, 16G's. I often thought about going up to a 4416 but never did and don't see me doing so. So this is a completely hypothetical question. Giving the advance in technology, are there now better DAW's on the market from other manufacturers than Yamaha without going down the PC/Mac route ?

By better I mean more flexible, more studio features, better sound (preamps. effects, noise ratio, sampling rate etc.....). With the understanding that any point of view is subjective

Hi,

I don´t think that there are better STANDALONE-machines out.
Had seen and tested some Boss- and Korg-Recorders, but for me they are far away from the quality of the AWs. Cheap plastic, smaller screens, not so good effects and a lot more compromises for editing and recording.

I absolutely love my AW1600, and it has done me and my band proud, but I have been thinking recently about what my next step might be in terms of recording...

It would mean using a computer as well of course, but I have been reading up about the Presonus StudioLive range of mixers:

A lot of money (£2300), that i don't really have, but they look pretty cool. Expensive, but when compared to the amount of money my band would spend on professional studio time to make our next album (min £250 a day), it would be a good investment I guess....

I use Presonus software with my AW1600 desk and it`s really excellent, a friend of mine uses the Presonus 24channel desk for live work with his band and it sounds awesome.
If your planning on hiring studio time quite a lot it seems a no brainer really.

Akai DPS24 MK2 is one hell of a machine, they spent a fortune developing it. If I dropped on a good one cheap I,d be very interested. Also the Radar system is now becoming within the grasp of the poor home recordist'

T Mac - interesting to hear positive stuff about the Presonus stuff.

I've never used a computer for recording - is that software easy enough to get the hang of in your view?

Its all the same as the G, for the most part. If you have a good understanding of the G's functions - DYN, EQ,- and can mix for a layered sound using verb, and delays on the G then it will be an easy transition cause you understand it all.

in addition to my aw4416, i also have a tascam sx1le ... i would recommend it to anyone who has the opportunity to get one... 48 channel with 16 very good preamps onboard, 100mm flying faders, efx and graphic eqs on all channels, fat channel, 6 auxes, multiple expansion slots and cards ... 16 track (at once) recording, 80 gig hd, cd burner, video out so you can add a big screen monitor, etc.. etc ..... extremely well laid out and user friendly.
worth the used price that they are selling for ....

Don't know if it's any help but I've had 4 machines - A Boss which loaded and stored songs at the speed of a drunken snail, a Fostex which was cheap, cheerful but not very flexible, an AW1600 which was leaps and bounds above the previous machines and finally the AW2400 which my nephew (a sound production engineer) tells me is as close to a professional studio as you're likely to get in a stand-alone box. Recently I lent it to a friend who's Tascam Neo 2488 was playing up and he's now on the lookout for an AW2400.

Thanks for the heads up mate, I`ll have to check that out also.

if you do decide to look for one, the only thing i have found to be a problem is the factory display panel ... it has the ominous distinction of failure via "horizontal line syndrom" .... i have heard from many fellow owners on the sx1 forum that the screen ultimately fails ... mine is no exception !
i currently have to endure approx. 25 horizontal lines on the display screen but ... there is a get around ... replace it with a new one for about $150 .... or .... use the vga output on the board and plug in a large screen monitor (which is much better for these old eyes of mine)
with that disclosed i can strongly recommend a good used sx1(le) would be a great addition to a small studio that would like an "in the box" system for an affordable price ... i have seen them as low as $700 on craigslist but sometimes as high as $2k ....
