T., does that machine have the same work flow as the G? I mean, track recording, overdubbing, performing a mixdown to a separate mixdown track applying effects etc...?

Many would agree with you, given the latest portastudios they have produced, a step backward from the 2488 Neo. It's as if they don't know what they're doing any more.

Teac/Tascam was the holy grail of analog recording. I enjoyed both of my recorders from those days. The second I bought that Tascam 788, I knew I was in trouble. Not that I'm the most intuitive guy, but I could never get my head wrapped around that machine, especially the fx. When I got the G, it all made sense for some reason and with the recording 101, I was able to record my first test song with ease.

Not saying Gibson can or can't make it better, but I'm open to seeing what they can do. Someone still needs to make and support a good stand alone recorder.

I don't think their intent is to make TEAC better--I think it was a logistics buy. TEAC is already tooled up for manufacture of what Gibson may want to do, not to mention a likely better distribution system (internationally).

The name TEAC may just go away as a matter of Gibson's course...

From what I remember it could record to 8 tracks simultaneously, but no virtual tracks, and no dedicated stereo track to mixdown to, I used a Dat machine and a CD recorder, no fx, no compressor or limiter, no xlr`s just standard jacks, only an 8gb hardrive, but having said all that it had a great sound, I uploaded some of the songs I recorded on it on the forum a couple of years ago.

It was there and now it's gone!

It's a malfunctioning server. Once I downloaded the pic from the direct link, it also showed up in the original post. That webserver transfers the pic only when it wants to... not always.

Is this the recorder you bought?


I looked into that recorder and considered buying it many times but I eventually decided against buying it (if memory serves) because the 788 was designed to be used soley in conjunction with a computer. I was in no way geared up for that. The salesman also talked me out of buying the 788. Shortly thereafter.....I discovered the Yamaha AW16G.

It's a shame that Yamaha decided to get out of the stand alone recorder market. I was really hoping to get my hands on a Yamaha AW84 track recorder and set a new record for recording the most tracks on one song.

Correct me if I'm wrong. Didn't Jeffree once record a song with the AW16G that had a total of 54 tracks on it which set a new world record for total number of tracks recorded on the G and it was registered as such with the Guiness Book of Records? Or something like that.

Yes that is the unit I purchased. It didn't have a cd burner but Tascam offered an external cdr and then cdrw. It was not reliant on a computer. It was a total stand alone DAW. I didn't like it because I could never wrap my head around the fx. For some odd reason, my brain would not allow me to understand the workings of the unit's effects system. I recorded two songs, burned them both and sold the thing on ebay. While I didn't get my money back, it did afford me enough cash to buy the 16G (plus additional money). I'm glad I did.

I once recorded a song using a total of 55 tracks. That included a 16 track sequence from my Korg X3 and 39 tracks from the AW16G. A 55 track song.
