I have good news, this morning I repaired the recorder. I dismantled the unit and found the potentiometer on channel 2 was open circuit. I desoldered the pot, and then took it apart. I found there was a small piece of wood in the carbon path - this had also recessed the wiper contacts and prevented them from touching the carbon. I cleaned the track, bent the wiper contact very gently back until they made contact, resoldered the pot and now everything is working fine!

It's not the easiest unit to get into, but it was definitely worth it - and I don't need to order any parts from yamaha. So all is good.

Thanks again for everyone who contributed!
