A few hours back, Andre Kuipers returned into the athmosphere, touching down exactly as scheduled at 10:15 dutch time.

Together with Oleg Kononenko (Russia) en Don Pettit (USA) he stayed in the International Space Station for 193 days. Definitely heroes in my book. They have more courage in one finger nail than I will ever have in my entiry body. Andre Kuipers had a huge smile on his face.

Amazing how these feats go unnoticed these days. Madonna lets her nipple be shown, the Queen of England has reigned for 60 years, David Beckham has a new tattoo- all headline grabbers. Unreal.

I'm all with you Fezz. I don't understand how people can be so interessted by uninteresting things. We have a couple of magazines that are filled with nothing else than who divorced who and who was wearing what dress at some occasion. (on the other hand 60 years of reign is worth a note in my book)

Yet few people are aware of THIS for example.

People don't seem to realize that people like Andre Kuipers are opening a possible path to sanctuary when things down here go horribly wrong. Let's hope they win the race.

Have to agree with both of the previous postings. It seems to be such a throwaway society that we're living in these days, with very little forethought. One of the Apollo astronauts (can't remember which one) is very vocal about space travel, saying that it's the ONLY way that Mankind can survive. I think that ultimately he's probably right but in the meantime, there are other ways of approaching the problem of short-term thinking. You might be interested also to take a look at this:
