I have just had some oddness when trying to burn an audio CD. I've started using a box of 25 Verbatim CDrs. Around 6 of these wouldn't work in the G. The drive whirred away for ages, and the burn list wouldn't appear. I had to eject the CDr.

Next, I tried a new box of 50 TDK CDrs. The first one out refused to burn - it started to write and then the G puked it out. I tried several others, and they burned a track OK.

I've never had this problem before, even when using cheap Tesco CDrs. i thought Verbatim was meant to be good, and TDK have always worked in my G. I did notice, however, that the TDK ones are no longer blue, and are silver and feel kind of thinner to me.

Oh yes, I tried x4 - same thing.

Anyone else have these issues with these makes of CDr? Bad batches? I am rather unsettled, to be honest.

Thanks,

Seedy.

Yeah, I've witnessed similar fates with some cdrs. The burner is iffy at best when choosing which cd from a set it prefers to work with.

I've had a lot of discs rejected by my G over the years for no apparent reason. I've never paid attention to brand, so can't comment on that aspect, but it seems that it will reject one now and again, then does fine with the next bunch out of the same package.

Thanks RZ and JM. I am feeling a bit less stressed knowing that this is something others have had experience of. My fear was that it was the CD drive starting to go. I have read on here somewhere that it can be replaced, however. Sounds like scary hassle, though.

I have heard that the Taiyo Yuden brand is the one to get, so I will have to look into this.

Thanks,

Seedy.

Not one CDR issue... but issues with more CDRs.

So, Seedy Arse issues...

No Seedy Arse issues up to this point.  One reason for odd behavior can be dust on the lens. Inspect it with a magnifying glass. One tool that can help here is the stuff you use for cleaning photographic lenses, specifically the blow-brush.

Would that be a Seedy Arse wipe then ? :?

I've posted on TDK before and I've now stopped using them.

The TDK gold have been "re-engineered" to thinner and crappy with obviously no quality control. After years of paying top dollar and using them religiously, I was having so many failures that they went in the bin. Tried to raise this with TDK USA but they didn't want to know and fobbed me off with "send us the faulty disc and, if we are satisfied, we will replace it (singular)".

Changed to Verbatim and haven't had any further problems.

Note for AW2400 users: The error message is a rather frightening "CD or HD access error" or something similar.

I will buy a magnifying glass and take a look at it. I've been pretty careful with it - never leaving the tray open, just opening to put CDs in it. But of course that won't stop dirt from a CD flying of.

Hi Guitarman. I found your thread about TDK Gold. I used the blue TDK disks for a long time with no problem, but the new ones are silver and thinner. I would like to try Taiyo Yuden, and I read that they make JVC CDrs now, so I will try those first, as I don't seem to be able to find small cakes of Taiyo Yuden. Taiyo Yuden's own brand is That's, and I can't find them either.

The Verbatim ones I have are worse than the new TDK ones. So far 6/7 Verbatims have failed in the G to 1 of the TDK ones. I've burned about 7 of the TDK ones, for audio, and made two backups which compared OK in the G.

I have also read that many CDrs are optimised for high-speed burning, and can throw up errors at slower burn rates. HHB make a 1-8x CDr, so I will probably try those as well. They are pricey, but I think it would be worth it.

Why do they have to change things? Why can't they leave things alone?

Hey Seedy - I noticed that you said that the cheap Tesco ones work fine, which begs the question, why not use them then? Like you, I use those all the time and I rarely have problems with them.

^I'll deffo be using them for temporary back-ups and the back-ups of my back-ups (can't be too careful) and for disposable audio burns - those to give away etc. However, I am not sure about the longevity of the cheaper ones when used for back-ups. Cheaper ones I've used some years ago now haven't done very well.

Make your long term backups on a usb mobile harddisk (laptop type) but use it dedicated and switch it on only to backup or restore. It should last a lifetime. Still beter have two because some harddisks fail altogether. (as may your pc hd) I have two usb Harddisks and use them that way. (copy the CD contents to the usb disk) It will be much cheaper in the long run. Many of these large capacity HD's cost 99 dollars or less.

Thanks, Fordirk - I would never have thought of doing things that way. Sounds like something I can get to grips with. I think I am too concerned with keeping everything inside the AW16g box, so "thinking out side of the box" isn't something that comes to me too easily!
