I have always used TDK Gold for backups. When I bought the newest pack, I noticed that they were substantially thinner.

Today I had a problem with them. Many errors with the message "CD or HD access error". I changed brands and the problem disappeared.

Have TDK killed the golden goose?

I don't know. I've been always very satisfied with TDK. Less than 1% errors. I'll pay attention next time I buy them.

UPDATE - had three of these errors in a row yesterday. Changed to cheaper Verbatim discs and problem has disappeared. I still have 300 TDK golds left so I may end up using them as frisbees. TDK gold are premium discs at a premium price. As earlier indicated, the new TDK Gold discs are very much thinner than the old. The problem occurs when the disc is being finalised. TDK have killed the goose as far as I am concerned as I will no longer risk my valuable backups with them.

That's weird. I'd send them an email.

That sucks. I'd take them back post haste. And for sure contact the company via phone or email. They should send you a coupon or something for some more non working cds. Might as well have 600 that don't work than 300. It's a numbers game after all.

The only CD & DVD media I will use is Taiyo Yuden brand. I have never had a bad one. The company was recently acquired by JVC.

I have had very few rejected discs over the years from my 1600 or my 2400. I pay little attention to the brand i buy, although it is usually a name that has been around.

I did email TDK USA with my concerns and got a very glib "take it up in Australia" and a number to call long distance (not a free one). The email answered none of my questions and simply said if I could demonstrate the discs were faulty, they may consider giving me replacement discs.

Out of interest, the "old" TDKs had were a thick disc with green writing, the "new" ones are quite thin and have gold writing - could anyone in UK/Europe and USA check the colour on theirs pls?

I don't think it is a bad batch - I think they have changed supplier and, by the way, the TDK site i visited has Imation copyright signs all over it so that may be a clue as well.

By the way the popular Philips brand DVD's are also made by Taiyo Yuden, unless Philips changed their supplier.
