ok...so I'm officially sick and tired of building drum tracks with a mouse...I'm thinking of buying an electronic kit...I was wondering since it has midi connections, could I use it strictly to record a midi performance and import that to cubase? And if so what would I need to connect it to my computer... remember I'm midi stoopid....thanks guys!

This is the kit I was looking at...it fits my price range, but I don't know jack about electronic drums...any thoughts?

You can record the sounds direct into the recorder as is. The advantage of recording to midi is you can edit the performance and then play it back into the drum kit and record the audio into another channel of your software or hardware DAW.

You will in addition to your kit , need a midi interface between the kit and Cubase to record midi events. Simply connect the midi out of the kit to the midi in of the interface and either a USB or Firewire cable on to the computer. If you have Firewire on your computer , I highly recommend it over USB .

In Cubase you just need to install the audio/midi driver for the interface , select it in the audio properties tab and you are up and runnin.

Also, sometimes if you have a decent sound card, the joystick port doubles as a midi port. Takes kind of a funky cable, but it'll get your midi to your cubase.

thanks cats...sounds like it shouldn't be too much trouble...maybe the sounds on teh module will be good enough...I guess I won't know till I try em...

Yah Jake,
There's stuff that'll change the sounds to almost anything you want now. Real good sounding drums. Drumagog sounds good and offers lots of drum kits...it literally replaces drum audio with it's samples. So you can record any stupid sounding snare and then drumagog it into any snare you want (or can pay for, or can scam from a friend...LOL) and tweak away.

'61 and I used to do a lot of experimenting with accoustic drum kits with midi triggers mounted. Some interesting way out sounds could be triggered from a synth or even an external drum machine.

In some of our songs , he would record both audio and midi versions at the same time allowing me to go back and patch in an electronic snare instead of the real one for example.

If I ever delve into drum kits , I will have an accoustic set with midi triggers.
