I didn't do all of these but if your not sure about something skip it and go on.

Be very carful editing the windows registry. Make a backup of it first so you can restore it using the windows safe mode if things go crazy.

Might not be a bad idea to restore it to an external flash or USB jump drive.

Thanks Geno, very useful.

My living room pc died last friday (the HD rotates but the pc doesn't see it), so I have to replace it and reinstall windows.

I might also try the freeware solution.

When I recently rebuilt my dell for use as a dedicated audio workstation I also followed these optimization tips. No intranets.......no virus or firewall needed. :D The machine took quite a while to boot before optimization, but now it boots REALLY fast, and is rock solid. I found the same pointers while lurking around over at the presonus forums, and they do indeed provide a significant increase in performance......
Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!

:rr:

Be careful. The moment you connect a USB stick, or a home written CD or a floppy disk to your PC and it does not have anti virus software installed, you're at risk. What I would do is install anti virus software and disable it while using it as a sound work station. Or you should at least have the disciplin to scan everything you'll feed the computer with on another workstation, something that you will eventually forget to do. In that case, it's just like sex. You can convince yourself she's not infected and that'll work - until it doesn't.

As long as you do that, you should be OK. :)

i have a sampler-only PC, does that count? my Akai S3000XL sampler is so ancient and clunky it needs its own Windows 2000 SCSI PC to transfer and edit its samples. i figure that in a couple more years, it will be so retro that it's actually cool
