Hi; I´m owner of Aw1600, and sometimes I still have some troubles...

One of these is: when I want to apply an effect to a track, -not as imput effect, to the track- I select the track, I select the effect, and... I can´t ear nothing with the effect...; perhaps are these effects -for expample, a reverb, or a chorus- so subtle that I can´t ear it if I don´t apply a big parameter of something?... Or, may be neccesary to push a buttom to apply the effect,? , because there is only a buttom that bypasses or not the effect, but no more...
And, why not a button to free the effect and not to bypass it...?

This is a matter, but I have others... Before

Well, I want to say that before to select an effect, I push the recall button...

I think the sequence is correct to apply them...

You need to press the effect button repeatedly until you get to the send page. Then you can alter the amount of signal that is sent to the effect.

Page 85 in the manual.

Don't get fooled by the ON - Off button. ON means the bypass is on and you won't hear the effect. Off means no Bypass - so that is when you will hear the effect. You control the amount of effect to each channel on the send screen. Eff 1 and Eff 2 have separate send screens. Sorry if you already have this basic info, but thought you might have been fooled by the (possibly seeming) opposite function of the on-off toggle.

There are always those gritty "little" steps; however, you need to "RELEASE THE EFFECT" TO the track....and it's so easy to click on track 4 when you want track 5--so a visual check will help.

You can click on an effect for a vocal track BEFORE mixing; I did/do this with my 2816 as it "empowers" the vocalist with some ambience; my fave for vocals is the STAGE reverb. And, that reverb is also on the 1600.

As someone said in another place, "if you RECORD using reverb, you're stuck with it. If you add reverb when you mix, you can unstick it any time you think it's heavy or too much." I paraphrase of course.

I once added some STAGE reverb to a professional DAT tape session and gave it to the bass player of the group--it made the vocalist come alive and sound like she was singing "on a stage." BTW, SHE loved it and she tours.
