OK so what is it about Gouda then?

I thought I'd got cheese sussed....Stilton was King (but Parmesan ran a close second). Then this Christmas, my wife bought a cheese selection pack from Tescos (Bastards!! lol) and there was a soft french cheese in it......Unfortunately the wrapper had got thrown.....It must have been very ripe...Cos it was absolutely stinky.......and the best bit of cheese I have ever tasted..... :)

Fortunately I went back to Tescos mid January and they still had some of these selection packs left over.................................And guess what it was..................just a plain old French Brie!!.

Since then I have bought several Bries, left them for "ages" (probably not long enough) but none come close.....

Any Ideas??

Now sell me the Idea of Gouda....and i'll go buy some (and what should I look for) ?

P.S. Has DC in France made a re-appearance yet...we all miss him and his knowledge.

i work for tesco and i bought the same pack the brie in it was Tesco's Finest Brie, they also have an aged brie which is good .

PS Maturing the brie is best left to the cheese makers because they can keep the cheese in the best atmosphere . I would suggest that you pick you cheese with the nearest date to eating as that will be ripe for eating

I've tried Tescos "Ripe and Ready" but it doesn't come anywhere close....... Is that what you mean by the "aged Brie".....anyway Hands Up to Tesco...Whoever bought that batch for the selection pack, must have reaaly known his stuff. As a Tescos "Insider" could you find out what the source was?

regards

Stroma

and I still have to explore the Gouda path
