This past Saturday evening our son was spending the night at a friend's house, so my wife and daughter decided we should cook dinner together and try something interesting that we know our son wouldn't like. We settled on...tofu.

We tried a few recipes - one for baked tofu in BBQ sauce - it sucked. We also made sweet potato fries, which were ok (it was a new recipe, and not as good as the ones we usually make). Finally, we tried making key lime tarts with...tofu. They sucked - nasty grainy texture. The pie filling was so bad we didn't even finish making them. Instead we filled the tart shells with lemon curd, topped them with marshmallows, and baked them to a gooey delight.

Anyway, we learned three things:

1) We really don't like tofu.

2) We really can cook together and have fun. This was important, as I do all of the cooking and am pretty territorial in my kitchen (i.e., stay the hell out while I'm cooking!).

3) Pomegranates are seasonal - won't come back until October. I figured that in this global economy you could get pretty much any kind of produce any time of the year. It's summer somewhere, right? Not so with fresh pomegranates, but who would've guessed that one could get pomegranate molasses at the local grocery store?

Anyway, we had fun, but that cookbook goes straight back to the library!

The key is togetherness. That is what makes it all worth while. Having everyone in on the action and enjoying each others company is the thing that makes for a happy family. Props for allowing everyone in your kitchen. Who cleans?

yeah, about the only tofu dishes that I like are of Asian or Mediterranean origin...never could stomach the foods that tofu is substituted for the original ingredient...

tofu is kinda like eggplant in that it takes on other flavers and gives you a little something to chew on. my favourite use is mixed with crunchy peanut butter.

Yeah, we like meat too. Even more now that we've tried tofu.

Same with "cheese" (intentionally put in quotes) in red wax.

Having had both real Gouda and the red wax kind, as well as both real food and tofu, I'd have to say there is little comparison. While red wax covered Gouda pales in comparison to the real aged stuff, it is still edible compared to tofu (especially melted on a grilled sandwich). 8)

Don't you hate people with "tofu" personalities? ie. they take on the characteristics of the people they are with, for better or worse - instead of being themselves.

I see what you mean. I know a lot of "sympathetic" people that, when looked at more thouroughly, are doing just that. Not everyone likes me (at work for instance) but at least I'm always my sincere self; people that DO like me, like me for what I really am.
