Hi there y'all. This might be a silly noob question but it's annoying the hell out of me, and I hope there is an easy fix...

So, I was recording my mate playing a song on his acoustic guitar using an Audio Technica at2021 plugged into a phonic preamp and then into m AW1600. At the same time i had a SM58 on the guitar as well (for good measure). During the recording we could hear a very quiet, but very annoying high pitched noise, which became a problem once we had recorded a couple of guitar tracks and were overdubbing vocals. I could filter it out by setting the eq to a very high Q at about 10 or 11kHz.

From memory, it only could be heard on the tracks recorded using the condenser microphone.

In the end I used software (Sonar) to carefully eq this irritating sound out of each track (again a high Q filter at about 10kHz), but really I would prefer to know what it was so i can avoid it in the future.

Can anyone identify it for me?

Thanks for the help!

Hi Hamish and welcome to the forum.

Pull out the mics one by one and see when/if the sound disappears.

Could you give us a sound clip to listen to?

hey there. Sorry it took so long for me to get this sample together. It's not mixed at all and is a short 'silent' section and a few bars of guitar and bongo (or something). it is here for listening

I plugged in the microphone and preamp and checked to see if the noise went away, but the noise didn't happen, which made me wonder if it was something in the room generating such a sound (the space was an art studio which was available at the time). I do not love intermittent faults.

Anyhow, any comments or suggestions are welcome.

Cheers!
Hamish

Hi,
I hear this and I think it is similar to HD or fan noise. 10Khz is probably too high to be AW disk, but could be. Was your mic close to AW or PC..?

This is high pitch and not very loud, I am sure U got it recorded with sensitive AudioTechnica and not Shure... Just try different combinations and mic placements.

hi there Dejan. I didn't think of fan noise. I had the microphone about 3 or 4 metres away from the AW. There was a PC in the room but I'm pretty sure it was turned off.

Thanks!
Hamish
