I got a "vintage" lava lamp from my mother-in-law and it worked great till I replaced the bulb which burned out (probably the original or very old). I got the same wattage (40 I think), but the OLD bulbs must have burned HOTTER since the lava does flow like before.

any suggestions for replacement bulb?

Hi Denny,

Theoretically, when the old bulb was 40 watts, any 40 watt bulb will do. Most of the power will go to heat, and even then most of the light will also turn to heat. That means that no matter what bulb, 40 watts of heat will be emitted by the bulb.

I can imagine that the power consumption of a light bulb is not specified very accurately. Be careful trying a bulb with a higher power consumption. The bottle might break when it gets too hot, which is dangerous, having water running over a powered light bulb.

Hope this helps.

R

I DO have a 40 watt bulb of similar type! so my best guess is that perhaps they are making bulbs "more efficient" than 35 years ago which put out LESS heat (hence the lack of good lava flow).

I'd try a bulb of a different brand. Even if the bulb is "more efficient" (which I don't believe), the light is turned into heat also. That means that if the bulb consumes 40 watts, you have 40 watts of heat in the end.

Maybe it's a bad bulb, maybe the specification method is different (there's a huge difference between 35 watts and 45 watts, both given the label "40 watts").

I think my bulb burns TOO hot because after a while the lava disintegrates into tiny little blobs, and looks nothing like lava. This is after a couple of hours. A guy right up the road from me was KILLED by his lava lamp when it exploded........because the idiot was "pre-heating" it on a stove burner

Mine is still too hot. I will try a dimmer to lower the heat to keep the "lava" from becoming "foam". I'll let ya know how it works.

A year or two ago, I was trying to find a lava lamp to purchase....and I couldn't find any in the city. I went online, and I found there were quite a few lava lamp forums ( similar to this one ), for fans of lava lamps. Bulb replacement was a hot topic on those forums, so with a little searching you might find the answer as to what bulb is best.

Here's one of the lava lamp websites:

http://www.oozinggoo.com/index.html

They have a new forum, but you have to join to view the contents.

Here's a link to their old archived forum which you can view without joining:

I did end up getting a nice used lava lamp from my neice, who found one at a yard sale for $1. The lava flows great, and the only issue is that the glass is 'cloudy and a bit streaky'. But other than that it works good. The other day, I was at Chapters ( Canadian Book Store Chain ) and I found they had lava lamps ( genuine ) for $35. I might go pick up another one, just for fun.
