In one of the other threads I saw repeated references to wax. What's that all about? You mean to tell me there's not really lava in a lava lamp?

Um, yeah it is lava, sort of. As volcanic magma is spewn forth from the earth's core, the assocoated heat liberates molecular oxygen and molecular nitrogen into their atomic forms. Small amounts of magma are therefore oxidized and become the waxy substance you are familiar with in the lava lamp.

I hope this clears things up JM

Jeeze , I'm glad we got that all cleared up . I thought it all came from exploding stars and crap.

Waxy lava indeed, it's the stuff that makes attractive Scottish women strike provocative poses with high end stringed instruments. I like it!

Gouda covered in lava. Now that would be good.

ok - I understand the oxidized lava getting waxy bit. Is it safe to assume that the black stuff in the really cool lava lamps is just more oxidized than the red stuff? Sort of like viscous ash or something?

Man, I learn so much hanging out here.

Care to venture a guess as to what that delightful filling is inside a chocolate lava cake?
