At last I have one......

Along with all the equipment, monitor placement, acoustic room treatments there is one other thing needed in every studio of any size to help set the abmiance..........

Ya gotta have a

LAVA

LAMP!

http://www.planetlava.com/shop/pc/viewC ... ategory=45

I found one of these at Walmart of all places for like $5 or $6 bucks and it looks cooler in person than the demo on the website above. Only down side is it runs on a timer set at five minutes at the moment but it is sensitive to movement without having to completely invert it so perhaps the monitors will shake too life....but then I would have to ditch the iso pads...

Technically this is a "modeling" lava lamp but it is the perfect size for my bedroom recording desk until I can build a proper room. Now if I could just go without sleep so I would have time to work on music I will be set!

Mine even came with an extra set of batteries.

I guess you can file this under cheap thrills :D or consider it a starter lava lamp until I get a dedicated room to vibe out.

actually it's a plasma globe.
looks like lightning in a globe and reacts to the touch or sound.

I've had a succession of lava-lamps in my life for as long as i can remember. Some frivolities don't stand the test of time - but this?

10/10 - Hat's off to the inventor whoever they may be!

Oh I love novelty lighting. I have the plasma globe, a guitar shapped lamp, recording light, (@#$%)dimmer switch and a lava light. I recently had to replace the lava bulb. Interestingly I needed to upgrade from the stock 25w bulbto a 40w just to make the thing percolate again, does the wax go bad in these things?

I could have sworn we had a Lava Lamp emoticon I wanted to use on the original post and looked for ten minutes convinced I was just overlooking it.

Am I imagining things or did the bulb just burn out?

As far as I've heard, yeah it does after 2-3 year. With my lamp, the liquid is now clear while it used to be blue in the beginning and the wax itself did turn "flakey" over time.
