At one time I was a huge Page fan but after seeing him several times with Zep , I thought he stunk on stage. Beck on the other hand has always left my jaw dropping live.

I couldnt agree more, he is just lazy. John Paul Jones needs some kind of medal for holding down the sound that the fans can groove to.
Shit, someone's gotta remind us that the song being played is the same one on the album.

Let me just branch off a little and say I have no tolerance for the noodlers who don't give the fans what they want when they go to see their show.
THE SONGS THEY HEARD ON THE ALBUM WHICH PROMPTED THEM TO BUY TICKETS FOR THE SHOW.
Or, in my case, the DVD. 8)

Taking it a little more left, Steve Walsh of Kansas.
Yes, his recovery is impressive and yes, Kansas as a band now are far superior to their 90's trainwreck, but honestly, soul or no soul, How's about singin the dang song they way we remember it?!

The song most certainly does not remain the same.

As far as Clapton is concerned, I have two words that place him solidly on the Pedestal of Eternity and I will accept no arguments here:

Blind Faith.

Another stellar Clapton moment for me was him doing a cover of Freddy King's "Hidaway" with John Mayall and the Bluebreakers.

re crossroads

rock & roll drums and bass will never connect with lead guitar in a more aggressive artful way than was captured on that 45 record
musicians are sadly no different from non-musicians
tell me i bake the best pies in the universe and i may already know it based on:

well erm i am a pie maker
people like my pies
lots of people like my pies
well hasen't there been pies for a long time
WTF?

so at some point the pie maker must evaluate his pies

crazily, music is not pie making

i may or may not add nutmeg....!?

what???

hey - i crazily believe that my flavor of chewing gum will become popular again someday.
decoded that means i am taking the david lynch cue that means (in my interpretation) that i love fads - that i *am* fads - like it or not!!
we wag our bags nomatter where we come from.
in the face of:

so i praise the crossroads recording in the highest esteem

to me it's as high as john coltrane's love supreme

it's high as karian's firebird suite

it's a crack in the universe

I know it's easy to dismiss Clapton, but don't judge him on the basis of what's on the radio (if you only went by airplay, Jeff Beck would just be a side-man for Rod Stewart). For instance, from Slowhand, they never play what I think is his best guitar work on that album, "The Core"

The Core was an awesome jam song....must've been fun to play live.

Nice benjamins - I loved the PDiddy/Kashmir collision. 8)

Not to bump a well-trod thread, but I don't get around much anymore, so...

I was having a Page/Beck/Clapton discussion with a couple of musician friends just the other day...How coincidental that I stumble to this thread today...

I've seen Page live three times in my life, in St. Paul MN with Zep back in...uh...19-and-something...76 maybe? Also with The Firm in 83 or 84 in Wichita KS, and around ten years back I saw the Page/Plant concert in Phoenix AZ...What amazed me most was the caliber of musicians he surrounded himself with and the fact that Page had never improved his live performance in all those years with all those acts...Just plain sloppy and unimpressive...But then, the technical excellence with which he recorded all those studio tracks--Man!

In my humble opinion Page is a genius of the hook-riff, creating the backbone structure of so many unforgettable songs. He was a perfectionist in the studio but had no patience with live performance. I never thought much of his solos, but, being a bass player hooked on "the Riff", I can appreciate his ability to be a bass players dream--No two songs alike--There are few artists who can make that claim...Page was a studio guitarist, that's how he met JPJ...

I always thought Clapton's best work was the stuff written by others--J.J. Cale first and formostly. I knew his drummer from the Backless, Slowhand and other albums many years ago, Jamie Oldaker, who is now an Indie Producer and studio drummer in Austin TX. He told me of tireless recording sessions and that Claptons most prominant feature, physical or otherwise, was his obsessive perfectionist approach to his tracks and everyone elses. I never saw him play live though, and that's a shame...

I love Beck. 'Nuff sed. Saw him one time in 1974 with the Jan Hammer Group (before Miami Vice turned Hammer to pop). You could not tell the difference between Beck live and Beck recorded, with maybe the exception that he wasn't afraid of going off the map once in a while live...One of my top ten all-time favorite albums is Jeff Beck with the Jan Hammer Group Live...Of course, having a bassist like Phil Chen on your team doesn't hurt a bit...

I'd drop everything to go see Beck, and I don't think I'd pass on the next opportunity to see Clapton (I've passed a few already), but Page---Eh, I already know what to expect...I respect and revere the guy for his songwriting and studio prowess, but I can see better live guitarists down the block at the blues bar on Saturday night...

...Had a couple minutes, thought I'd share... :D

Hi Robbie. Yeah, life is pretty good right now. Regardless what you might be hearing about the US economy, things are booming where I am, and I haven't had a busier winter in my 20 years as a painter...In fact, I'm finally getting around to getting the talent and funds together to pursue a serious recording project, some tracks still to be done on the AW1600...I'm so tired of the rough junk I've been creating so far, thought it was time...

I see you've expanded the forum, just remember; dizzying is ok, maybe even good, but there's a fine line between that and what makes the eyes glaze over...

I'll be in now and then, especially as I find myself mired deeper into the workings of my AW...You guys are always a blast.

Eric
