You must be very focused and pinpoint who you submit your music to. Making sure that #1 they will accept unsolicited material and #2 that they are in fact looking for the style of music you have to offer. It also helps to try to determine if said person or company is actively looking for music for a particular project. Simply shot gunning songs out there is likely a waste of time and money, but research and find those who will be open to what you have to offer.

There is a book published annually called The Songwriters Market that has some valuable tools and contact info.

There is also a great organization called Just Plain Folks that you might find helpful
