Sometimes I have the feeling that the best music was written for films and tv series. I particularly like the theme to 'Allo 'allo, a comedy about the war and French resistance. Really great music. I also liked the music to Lifeline (of which 'Allo 'allo was a parody) a lot, as well as the music to Space 1999 (the Star Trek competition).

What is your favourite film/tv series music?

The soundtrack to the movie "Starstruck", although I'm not sure all the songs were composed specifically for the movie.

So, given that that might not count, I would say "Borderline" by Ry Cooder.

We went and saw Lemony Snicket's a Series of Unfortunate Events some months ago. During the first few minutes of the post movie credits the music playing was quite quirky and captivating. I wonder if there is a soundtrack album.

A few great ones that come to mind are:

"Restless Natives" - Big Country (my favorite)
"Flash Gordon" - Queen (it's so cheesy but I still love it!)
"Jerry McQuire" - Nancy Wilson - (she only wrote some of the music, but chose the songs for the film perfectly)
"White City" Pete Townshend (he also wrote the screenplay)
"Rude Boy" - The Clash (not exactly a score, but awesome none the less)

..will probably think of others and post more later...

cool thread Robbie!

The soundtrrack to 'Sixteen Candles' with the Stray Cats doing their version of Sixteen Candles at the end of the flick. Great song(s).

I like the way Tarrantino uses music in his films. Little Green Bag (used as the title music for Resevoir Dogs) is rocking and fits the mood perfectly!

As far as music specifically composed for the film though, I guess I'd have to go with Brian Eno's work (The Prophecy Theme in Dune for one; crap film, great score).

An honourable mention shoud also go to the score from Hitchcock's Psycho (by Bernard Herrmann - he Googles), those stabbing (*ahem*) strings have become iconic since the film's release.

Film scoring is something I'd be really interested in trying, but I've not had the chance yet...

Loved the totally different style of music in the movie "The 5th Element"
also the way it was used was killer.

Then there is also the score for 2001 A Space Oddesey. That score was the beginning of my interest in classical music.

Gabriel's soundtrack to "The Last Temptation of Christ." According to the DVD extras, Scorsese had quite a bit of directive control over the music...interesting.

One of the really good soundtracks imho, is the one to the Film "Hannibal" with Anthony Hopkins. I don't think there's actually much on there, that was originally written for the film, but the mood it creates it class A!

My all time favourite: soundtrack to Martin Scorcese's "Taxi Driver" - by Bernard Herrmann.

IMHO this is still the best movie soundtrack that builds the atmosphere of the movie.

Besides, I love the sound of a sax.
