I decided to sign up for piano lessons. Last week I had my first lesson. The teacher (Frank) is a guy my age with a great sense of humour.

And now I'm practicing... geeze...

This is the piano I have at home. Lotte's been using it for two years now with the same teacher.

I quit piano at the age of 8 or so and the sting of the pencil on my knuckles and the shrill "curve those finger" lays heavy on my memory.

I hope Frank doesn't hit you or Lotte. LOL

Hitting students seems a bit out of fashion these days, thankfully.

All kidding aside... hitting or beating a student is preposterous. Even if a student is completely unreasonable, hitting is not a solution. There are other ways to get to a students mind. On rare occasions I have students write lines. Very old-fashioned and childish, and that is the message. Most of the times it's 100 lines so it is like 10 minutes of work. It's more a signal than a punishment. And I must admit, if a student has to write lines and he/she accepts the punishment and delivers them the next day without me having to ask... he/she gains my respect for that.

The piano lessons are all about having fun. And a bit about general knowledge. So, no pressure. For me it's a bit different, there are some goals I'd like to achieve, or at least, see how realistic they are. And having fun in the meantime is no punishment.

Hey Robbie,

Good news. Congratulations. I switched to Piano in the Music academy last year so last week i started second year Piano. I'm actually starting to read some notes after four years. Not where i want to be but moving in the right direction. It takes a hell of a lot of practice but it's worth it. If you need some sheet music or want to follow what i have done so far i have kept everything from lesson one.

Yes, Oscor. Some men my age buy a little red car. I tried but did not fit in any little red car so I decided to spend my midlife crisis differently. Hence the keys.

Had my second lesson yesterday. Showed the teacher what I figured out on my own (chords). Teacher approved . Got me a number of useful pointers. Now: practice & practice.

Didn't know keys could be that much fun.

I found keyboards way more interesting than guitar. Somehow it seems more like a 'complete' instrument. I certainly found it much more invigorating to learn - and it helped my pathetic music theory immeasurably.

It's a real discovery, never thought it'd appeal to me the way it does. I always record the lesson so I have all the teacher's remarks etc. I enjoy it immensely.

I looked into it a couple of times but it's puzzling... I'm kinda stuck. Some things tell me it's a software issue, others tell me it's a server issue.

I'll look into it again shortly and with some more persistence.
