It's only taken 4+ years (2 if you count when I'm home where I can work on it). Plenty of cosmetic defects, but it looks good from 6 feet! :) Plays very nicely, but doesn't sound as "full and warm" or as loud (a priority for bluegrass jams) as my two A models. Maybe with playing time and more tweaking of the set up it will sound better.

I think it turned out as well as I could have expected, since I had no prior related experience. Definitely not an easy job. I'm glad I did it, but doubt I'll build another mandolin and definitely not an F model. Working around that scroll will drive one nuts! However, I'm thinking about building a ukulele (from a kit, like my mando) for my granddaughter's 5th or 6th birthday. Got to use all those tools I bought for something else. :)

You can read of my trials and tribulations during the project at http://www.hogtimemusic.com/mandobuild/.

What a beautiful instrument, Ralph! I admire you for your craftsmanship and even more for your patience.

I love the weblog that you made for it, too. Very detailed and it shows clearly what an awful lot of work it is.

Do you have an estimate on how many hours are in that project? Must be hundreds of hours...

I'd love to be able to hear some sound samples!

Ralph, what an accomplishment. It's looks beautiful and I'll bet with age as the wood settles in the sound becomes fuller and richer. Just completing the project is a real success story. You and Stetts get my utmost admiration for the builds.

Nice.

Thanks for all the thumbs up, guys! Doesn't make we want to build another one, though. :)

I didn't keep track of the number of hours (and glad I didn't). Definitely in the mid several hundreds. I think I read a pro luthier could build the same model for around 160-200 hours.

Haven't recorded it yet, but here's a recording of it before I put on the stain and finish.

Below is a pic of all the separate parts I started with. I was rather overwhelmed when I opened up the box.

That's a beautiful instrument--I'm always in awe of those who can play the mando, and building one? I have enough of a time putting the pieces back together when they break!

Ralph,

that mandolin looks great. Like the finish and the company label at the headstock =D> .
You must be proud to be an owner of a selfmade mandolin.

Keep in mind that it is a wooden instruments, so sound may be better in some time of playing it. So grab it and enjoy playing it.

Andreas
