I am a novice in multi-track recording and wanted to ask for advice on these 2 machines that I am searching for: AW4416 and AW2400.

Personally I would prefer to work with a AW2400, since it connects Via USB to a computer (to share songs online), is a faster machine to work with, and seems to have cleaner and simpler menu pages.
I am aware of the limitation of 12 tracks in 24 bit mode, of the AW2400. Since I will work on electronic music (synths, drum machines), I will use probably more than 12 tracks.
I can chose to record instead in (16 bit)... 24 tracks - more than enough.

My question is this:
Bearing in mind the improvement of the AW2400 preamps - comparing to those on the 4416 -, do you think that if I choose to record in (16 bit) on the AW2400, the final result will have inferior sound quality, comparing to recording on the AW4416 in (24 bit) mode ?

You will get good results with both machines. I am unsure whether the 4416 will record 24 tracks at 24 bit ??? Be sure of that before you choose, based on that spec.

The 2400 is easier to transfer out (USB), but you must have a computer .. the connection can't be direct to an external hard drive or thumb drive. So there are transfer steps involved with both machines.

The 4416 has only one virtual track for the stereo mix. That may not seem like a big deal, but if you are experimenting in the building of songs, it can become inconvenient having to move out a stereo track you may want to keep (if only for comparison), as you build on evolving ideas. there are work-arounds, that would have you move a mix to a pair of tracks (tracks have 8 virtual slots each) for safe keeping.

The 4416 has greater expansion possibilities with 2 slots available for add-on cards. If you find a 4416 with a y56k card, that would be good. A 2400 with a y96k card would be good too, but probably a bit more expensive.

Hope you find what you look for. -- good luck.

The age old question of 24bit vs 16bit. Personally I use 16. Keep your settings at -6 when recording and you'll still have the headroom available for good recording. I love my 2400.
