My best condensor mic is a $80 Samson. I got some "birthday" gift cards from Guitar Center and want to purchase good mic for vocal and general purpose recording (i.e. overhead on drums, lead vocals). OPINIONS PLEASE????

I have had good luck with my Studio Projects mics. I have their LD tube which is a bit more than your price range, but they do have a lower priced line that are very usable, by the reports of others here and from some guys that i know who used a pair on a "grunge" project they did ( those same guys are now a bluegrass band - go figure). The Rhodes NT1(??) gets good recommendation often on this site.

I keep pushing the AKG 535. It is right in your price point. Great "work horse". Nice full sound. It is black with a ball type grill, and a slender body. It is not prone to a lot of wind pops, in my experience. So it is great for vocals, on stage and in the studio. I have done tons of vocal work with it and am always pleased with the result, from a technical point (- no mic fixes bad pitch or timing !!!). The 535 is great on a guitar cabinet, or an acoustic or as overhead on a kit. Works great on a snare too. I have a pair of them - they have done me very, very well. I bought them on recommendations from two different guys I asked the same question you posed. The guitar on the link below was done with the AKG 535. It was run through the pre on a small beringer mixer with a bit of the AW pre added, but I have found the AW's preamps quite satisfactory for many application too.

As you are a drummer and would be using overheads, it is always good to have a pair. I do believe the Studio Projects lower priced models would get you a pair within your range. Does Guitar Center deal with the SP line?

RHODES NT1 looks like a great candidate! Has anyone ever used the Baby Blue $299? Couple friends in LA like them and say they sound like mic of much higher price.

SP B1 has worked well for me, though a bit bright in my experience...I heard excellent things about their C1 line...

I used the Rode NT1a and the NT1000 for testing. A warm, clear sound, very sensitive, and without an external preamp! Strong signal, absolutely hiss-free.
