If anyone might be interested, there's a group buy on a 9-pattern tube mic getting started here.

I stay out of the group buy thing as a rule, but Alan Hyatt of Studio Projects is running this one, and I've picked up enough quality gear from him that I have a trust.

He thinks he can get the mics for around $160 US, if he can get around 250 committed buyers.

I need nice mics, and these are a hell of a lot closer to nice than what I got...

Are there pictures? I went to the link and found the discussion, but no info regarding what instruments.

It was a quick read, so i may have missed the details.

I use acouple of SP mics, and upon receiving my first one, had an issue. A call to Studio Projects in California resulted in me talking to Alan Hyatt himself. He instructed me over the phone on how to examine the electronics, revealing two gizmos that were too close together. Spreading them fixed the issue, saving me many hours and headaches with warranty claims. Good service and good products.

Actually, you missed out on the decision making process as well. They put up a site with several pics and specs to vote for, the winners between ribbons and tube. Alan has not posted pics yet.

These won't be SP mics. These mics will be special order from a Chinese factory, manufactured to Alan's specs and the logo will even be a group choice.

Read the thread a bit slower and you'll see links to the various voting sites.

I ordered two of them.

This is the mic they're working on. The thread at SP will be much more informative than me ( I resemble an old Star Trek NG episode; "We look for things...Things that make us go" )

Alan would like to do the buy, as would I, but the idea will be dropped if a couple hunnert more victims don't sign on...

We (that is - I) don't get to see the images, Eric.

Got any hair back by now? :)

think I'm gonna go for it...now only 197 people need to follow...guess we've got til 12/30...

Read some of the initial thread, but not all...can you summarize and tell me what "commercial" mic that they are shooting for? I am not knowledgeable in the microphone area...

Was the final damage $160 ??

Thanks...

Yeah, initially he was talking about $160 with 250 "investors". Apparently he found that a bulk deal can still be had with fewer, as he doesn't have near the 250 he thought he would need.

Well, it's been interesting. There are still some "voting" on configuration, bottle, horse-pecker, etc., and I'm no tech, though I might know a couple of the $300 terminology. And yeah, it's been a really long thread for there only being 50+ guys interested. There has been a small number of "agitators", who for whatever reason feel the need to log in and make a stab at disrupting the buy.

The mic will, as of yesterday anyway, have a Neumann M7 style capsule and 12AX7 tube, which I guess make it similar to a U47 or U48...But that's already beyond my technical expertise. It will come with the power supply and a flight case, unless they nix the case. I personally can't do without it. Alan said it should only add $5-6 to the total...

All I know is that I really like the SP products I have, and that gives me reason to trust Alan--He has a reputation to maintain. He is also warranting these mics, something most group buys don't even offer beyond an immediate exchange if you were to get a dud. I will not sign on to any other group buy, never have.

Yeah, he says between $150 and $160 each, depending on the price of the flightcase. Shipping from California (not China) to your house will be extra.

He's heard one, says they sound really sweet.

Sorry guys, looks like a bust.

Too many egghead techs screaming for minutia, I guess.
