Has anyone ever tried building your own microphone?

Although I don't have the illusion to be able to handcraft a microphone with decent characteristics, I'd like to try to build one and see if it works. Just wondering if there's any experience in that field.

Well, I've repaired and rebuilt few mics in past, but haven't made one entirely.
What kind of mic U want to build, Robbie? Ribbon, dynamic, condenser?

I think it should be possible to make a condensor. Technically it's a really simple device. For a dynamic, one should make a coil, which is very hard to do given its dimensions and the required precision.

for a dynamic mic, grab a loudspeaker. connect to input wires. voila! one crappy dynamic mic.
