Let's back up for a sec. and review a bit of the simplest possible Midi connection between two devices. (See example A ) Of the two sets of keys , we can assume the device on the left is the master and the one on the right is the slave. We want to have the left keyboard (master) play itself and the right (slave) right ? Hmmmmmmm stubborn silence. We recheck the connections (master , midi out and slave , midi in) Why in the heck are these devices not talking to each other ? The reason , barring no bad or misconnected midi cables , is , you guessed it ! They are not on the same midi channel.

Midi standards established long ago dictated that any key related data along with it's coresponding pitch , velocity , aftertouch , pitch bend , etc data , to all be sent on one single midi channel. There are 16 separate midi channels . In other words the sender and receiver midi channels MUST be set the same in order to communicate. If both are set to channel 1 , then data presented to channel 2 to 16 is ignored by the slave .

The good news here is that modern midi devices allow the settings of transmitting and receive channels independently. Also they allow all midi channels to be used as once. (sometimes the All Call term is used)

How 'yall doin so far ?
