Gentlemen,

Here is how to link two AW 1600s (via the midi/digitial optical) according to Yamaha:

Both aw's will do thier own mix --the slave will send its mix to the master thru the digital stereo out --one aw will be the master and make the stereo track of the 32 trk mixdown

1) connect midi out of master to midi in of slave --connect midi out of slave to midi in of master.

2) on the master and slave make sure the midi in/out is selected for midi and not for usb on the utility midi 1 page

3) on the slave ---on the midi 2 utility page-- highlite mtc---make the slave a mtc master and a mmc slave.

4) on the master --on the midi2 page make the master a mtc slave and a mmc master

This handles the synchronization ---the master tells the slave to play but cant start itself until it receives mtc timecode and when the slave receives the mmc from the master and does play it sends mtc timecode and now the master will play --

For the audio mix of the slave to be received by the master and combined with the master's stereo mix -with a cable, connect the diguital out of the slave to digital in on the master

1) press utility button until the d.in hdd page is accessed ---turn on dig rec----enable the digital in and assign 2 input channels to be used by the dig input .

2) when doing the mixdown enable the two input channels to be part of the mix as well as the masters own tracks ---just connct them to the st line --control thier incoming level with the st fader on the slave aw1600

this is a lot of procedure but it does work --make sure that the tracks on the master and slave are recorded while the whole setup is connected ---monitor and overdub while listening to the overall mix from the master monitor outs thereby retaining synch ---hope this helps
