Post subject:  Exporting a stereo mixed file
Timed has moved on and I have been experimenting with using my I Pad pro and Garage Band
for recording. Is it possible to export my final stereo mixed files to create final mastered versions using Garage Band. If yes please could you advice how, for example do I send the file by the transport system to a PC and then transfer to the I Pad, or save to the CD drive and then transfer etc.

You do not say what AW machine you use, but I suspect 1600 or 2400 as you mention Transport folder. What you need on the 1600 is on pg 136 in manual

Go to Edit page and choose Export. A screen will appear giving fields to specify track # and Virtual # and also the From and To points.

When on Track # line hit the Stereo Track's select button, or use jog wheel to scroll to the desired Track (ST in your case). Then specify the virtual track to which you mixed down.

On the From line go to start of file (RTZ button) or any time where mixdown actually starts if you are trying to exclude the count in for e.g. Then tap Enter key and that time will appear on the From line.

Then cursor to the To line and get to the end of the file or to any time representing the end of the mixdown. Tap Enter again and that time appears on the To line.

Now, tell the machine to do the Export (I think the button says Execute).

The file will go to the Transport Folder. You will have opportunity to rename the file on the way.

Now connect the AW to your computer via USB and tell the AW to Connect. PG 136 in manual (1600) shows access to USB via the Utility button. On 2400 there is a dedicated USB button

The AW will appear on your computer, just like a camera or thumbdrive, as a storage device. The AW has one HD but it shows up as two partitions. The Transport Folder is in the second of these two partitions. Open that folder and drag and drop in or out as you need.

If you are on an Apple (does Garage Band even work on a PC??) you use the Finder I think. If it is on a PC, then the partitions show up under Computer - where you would see your C drive and all other drives, such as the dvd burner, or other HD, thumbdrives, cameras etc.

Once there you know how to get stuff on to the IPad.

This process can't be accomplished via CD on the 1600 or 2400. On a 16G however there is no transport folder as there is no USB so moving via CD is the only option on the G

Thanks Byron, yes it is a 1600, I am reasonably familiar with the process you have defined although I haven’t done it for a while, I think what was troubling me was for the files I transported previously there are two folders that appear, Audio and Render, so it is not a single wav file. I will have to check tomorrow whether a mix down file still has two folders because if it does, I can’t see how you would export to Garage Band, or would you just use the audio folder not sure yet. Thanks again. Ps I also have a funny feeling the a file burned to CD may be usable as they are still WAV files ( not mp3), so I will have to check both these aspects.

You are on the right track but up the wrong tree. the HD has two partitions that show when you connect via USB (Utility Button screen). Both partitions have Song folders (#1, #2). Inside these Song Folders are your Project (Song) folders. Insider these Song (Project) -(these terms are interchangeable at this level) folders are the Audio and Render files mentioned in the quoted portion of you message. These at NOT the folder you want from which to retrieve wav data. It is there but as you correctly observe it is in bits and pieces in the Audio folder. the machine is able to sort it out but you certainly won't, especially if your Project (Song) is large. the machine keeps all your dubs, retakes, auto punch-ins and virtual tracks. they are numbered, not named, and have no date or time stamp. Impossible to locate anything except by chance in a project that has been worked upon. But ...

You need to use the Transport Folder found on the second of the two partitions. In that folder you are able to place files and tracks that you wish to export or import to the AW. Use the EDIT button on the AW, BEFORE you hook up to USB, to transfer files you want to move off the AW (Export).

In your case, use the jog wheel, cursors and enter key to populate the fields on the Export screen. Track will be - ST. Virtual will be 1-8, depending on what you specified when you did the desired mix. Set the From time (RTZ key gets you to 0:00) and the To time ( the OUT key may get you to end of file or use the marker up/down buttons).

When the fields are specified Execute the transfer and that will go as a complete wav, with opportunity to name to help further Identification. Pg 136 in manual.

Now is the time to hook up via USB. Open the partition containing the Transfer folder and your file will be there waiting for you to move to your PC. It will be a 2-track(stereo). Data moved from track 1-16 will be mono. Your garage band will probably self-identify it as stereo.

Let's hear the song when you are done your manipulations.

thanks for your very comprehensive reply, I guess while you were writing I explored things and came up with the same conclusion which is great. So I transported the file and then it took quite a while again to figure out how to transfer the file from my old Windows 7 pc to my I pad. Interesting because I managed to transfer what was a basic music file using I tunes but not in wav format. so then I purchased an app called air share lite for 99p in UK money and successfully transferred it in to I Pad Land. I then set up a Project in Garage Band and hey presto transferred the stereo file straight in. (It then got me wondering if I could then do the same with individual tracks and would they still be in sync but I Haven’t done that yet.)
So now the next stage will be to do final mastering of the track and the cycle will be complete. I can only consider myself as an enthusiastic amateur, the track is just an early experimental demo but I don’t mind sending it to you a little later ( if I can figure how to do that).
I have then encountered some horrible things going wrong with my 1600 which I will put in two separate posts after this, thanks for your interest and help.
