Post subject:  external fx to the stereo tracks

I have been trying to apply external EQ hardware to the mixed down stereo tracks using the aux sends method as per the manual and this forum.

For whatever reason, it is not working out.

As I have 2 aw1600's I am thinking about running the stereo tracks via the stereo outs from machine 1 into 2 input tracks of machine 2. i have only one eq unit so i will have to do it once for L and once for R.

Will i be losing quality by using the stereo outs ?

Not too sure on that but can you not use the digital stereo out for that Oscar, that would`nt lose any quality or at most minimal.

I think the way you describe is the way to go. Any loss will be minimal if you set the gain carefully. the digital out is useful in circumstance when you have two machine linked via midi, or when your outboard gear has a stereo digital in, but I doubt you mono box has a digital in. Even if there is a digital on the EQ unit, with the digital out the LR signal is sent along a single rca patch so your mono machine would get both together, defeating your ambition.

I might try experimenting, first mixing down with no EQ at all. Then rather than using your external, I might move the mix to two separate pairs of tracks and then re-recording the identical copies of the mix, this time with Yamaha EQ. Each copy of the mix could be EQ'd individually. with emphasis on highs on one, lows on the other, utilizing HPF and LPF. This mix could be massaged further with EQ on the stereo bus, during this "mastering" pass.

i have not been able to get a good result with the external EQ on 2 channel mixes, no matter what I try.

Doing a bit of digging, I have discovered that there may be an impedence mismatch between the aw1600 (120) and the eq (600).

whatever it is, I have lost patience and will stick with the in the box eq for mixdown.

the pultec clone still works great during tracking as part of the external preamp-compressor-eq chain so i will stick with that. it also means that i have to get the sounds right going in, which is what i prefer anyway.

i was experimenting to determine if it was worthwhile getting a second eq so i would have stereo eq. just daved myself some money !
