Leafing through the free plugins that came with Protools MP9, I came across a very basic EQ called Air Kill. As the name suggests, you pick the band you want from Low,Mid,High and there are minimal controls that cream off the top. Sounds like the opposite of what you would normally want but I was able to quickly transform the screeching synth strings I had recorded into something more realistic (damped as in a concert hall is the easiest description). Haven't tried it on synth brass yet but it could be useful there as well.
