Hi All, I'm thinking of investing some of my meagre disposal income in something better than the cubase le which came free with my AW1600. It would be purely for editing and mastering (all audio at this stage, no midi at all). I can only afford the 'elements' versions of Cubase 6 or WaveLab 7 (around 100 euros). Which would you guys recommend? I'm doing this mainly cos the reverb B that come with Cubase LE seems totally rubbish to me. Any advice greatly appreciated.

Chris

I have used wavlab 3 for many years now. I know the newer versions have more bells and whistles. 3 is strictly a 2 track version. Have the newer version got multi track formats now?? I have always meant to upgrade, but haven't. There were free VST plugins available, and I have found WavLab able to handle all the mastering tasks i give to it. I now use the y96K card in my 2400 to do most of the mastering, such that it is, that i undertake. but i still do use the wavlab to assemble, edit etc.

Hi. If you are on a budget and have Cubase LE, i would stick with it and find me some free plugins. I work with LE. With a good compressor, limiter and reverb vst this software can really get things done. You can edit eq all you want.

How do you get your wavs in? do you have usb audio interface or something else you record with ?

Hi fordirk and Byron, thanks for the replies. I use usb to upload from AW1600 to PC. Where did you get your free reverb and compressor and sorry for the dumb question but what does a limiter do?

Hi PackBacker,

There are no dumb questions (except for constantly repeated ones) only dumb answers.

A limiter is an algorhytm that will keep peeks from going into the red (too loud) on your audio tracks. If used right they can make a recording smoother and more professional sounding. It's one of the basic tools in a decent system. I have to get back to you on where i got all the plugins i use but it has been posted on the forum. I don't have the time right now but PM me so i don't forget. If you want i can make you a package and mail them to you and tell you were to put to get it working. Some are no longer easy to find but worth having.

Hi mate, here are a few free plugins, I apologise if any are no longer active or free as I`ve had the links for a while now.
As far as software goes, I use Presonus Studio One, a lot of Pro Tools users are defecting to it as it has such a fast workflow.
It also has every plugin anyone would ever need from EQ, Compressors,Reverb and Limiter.
You can also download the demo to try it out.
http://www.presonus.com/
Enjoy.

Hey Chris,

Don't worry. (I can zip mine and send it.) I have tested it. It works very well and there are no spy, ad or virsusses present. I really recommend it. It's very good. The Mda package is also very usable. It will save you a ton.

PackBacker just click on this link here. It will take you to a site. There you can click on the 'download all vst plugins for windows'. When asked what you want to do with that save it in a place on your c drive where you can find it later.

Go to the downloaded file and unzip it. The resulting bunch of DLL file should be copied to "C:\Program Files\Steinberg\Cubase LE 5\VSTPlugins\Other" If you have Cubase 6 you should replace Cubase LE 5 with foldername on your pc.

If you start up Cubase after that you should have a bunch of new plugins. You can find them by using inserts and choosing from the 'Other' category. Does this ring any bells ? If you don't understand what i'm on about just let me know. I will get you a more detailed explaination.

If this is ok i will send you Glaceverb via the file exchange section. Do you know what that is ?

Hi again fordirk

Update! My wife has bought me an early xmas present. She found Cubase 6 elements and WaveLab 7 elements bundled together for a good price and bought them for me! It has Steinbergs Roomworks se reverb on it but I would still love to try out the glaceverb that you recommend, I have looked for the file exchange section but can't find it.

Also is there anyone on this forum who might be able to tell me why my evolution mk-149 midi controller isn't firing my synthesiser noises through midi?

thank you for all your help fordirk, it really is appreciated, if there is ever anything I can do for you....

Chris

Chris, Send me a PM and i will package the Glaceverb in a Zip file and send it to you. I'm a bit busy as my stepfather is in hospital with hart problems so i won't be as active as usual but i'll get it to you. Have you downloaded the mda library ? It's really usefull and will change Cubase LE into powerhouse with al kinds of effects (30 in all). The Vst dynamics bundled with LE is also wonderfull. If you can bear with me i will help you get your stuff together. Did you hear my last upload (wanna make it stop) ? It was mixed entirely in Cubase LE. It has for example four fully parametric equalizers that can be ste to shelving, hig or low pass at will. Even automation is possible so if you ask me the sky is the limit.

You got a great package. Be sure to thank your wife.

About volution mk-149 midi controller

The most likely cause is that your controller is not set to the right midi channel. What midi channel is your Synth listening on ? Check midi settings on both devices. You can also use Cubase to route midi from you controller to your synth or use the synt that is bundled with LE (Yes it has a synth too) and you can downlaod more VST synths. A recent post from Bokchoy links to a good free one.

Hi fordirk,

I am very sorry to hear about your stepfather, I hope he makes a full recovery. I am in no rush so please take your time.

[quote="fordirk"]Have you downloaded the mda library ?

I don't know what the mda library is I'm afraid (and what is a PM?) and I haven't a clue what channel my synth is listening on, I will try and find out, my Cubase has a Halion SE and a Prologue synth, great sounds but not firing form my mk-149 yet, will work on it.

Where do I find your last upload? I wold love to hear it

thanks again

Chris

Chris, Click on me !

So literally click on the text above (the words 'Click on me') I have put a link under these words that will take you to a site where you can download the mda library. Click on the 'download all vst plugins for windows'.
