Something that was in the deck leftover from when Jongi played the sax and flute for a BSR tune. He was warming up and I had this snippet for him to play to. He is a very talented player on the sax and flute. Go back and check out the BSR tune "Carnevale" to hear him really play.

That's really cool, and fun to listen to! Some really fine playing. You're killing it on the drums there man. I also thought the quality of the drum sounds/recording were excellent.

Thanks for listening. The drums and sax were in an open environment. When I was playing in an original funk band, Jongi would come and jam. There were times I was hearing a synth but it was his flute haha. Alot of fun. Wish we fleshed this out a bit more...

great playing on the kit Ray and on the sax too. When did you record that? You say in an open space? How did you mike the kit? I am doing a job in a big open space ( former church ) in a couple of weeks. I have done lots of recording in such spaces but have less experience with kits ( I have done some though). Would I be ok with a kick mic, and a 57 on the snare/hat, and two condenser overheads or might you suggest some other approach?

Thanks Byron I hope you're doing well. The room I recorded this in was the same room I would record the BSR tunes in. It was 20x20 with 9' ceiling. Gary used to tell me I recorded too hot lol.
anyway the set up is a mic on the bass drum, one for the snare/I had, and two overhead. The overheads were set the following: set the one overhead where I wanted it then run a string from the center of my bass drum beater to the mic and then down to the center of the snare drum. I would then use that same distance, and same method, to position the other overhead. This way they were equally spaced. Hope that makes sense lol.

I take it that the distance from the beater to the o-h is not necessarily the same as the distance from that oh to the snare? But these two match for the second o-h distances ie. beater to oh 1 = beater to oh 2, same for snare. ???

Do you prefer keep the oh mics over and inside the kit's "space" or out towards the edges?

this is a big room. The band will be amplified, with Front of House speakers and floor monitors, Guit, kit, vocals, keys - melody and also covering the bass. No audience. Any tips on how "dampened" the kit should/might be to avoid resonance issues, should they arise?

I will be recording the room as well as taking direct feed or close mic from the instruments and vocal.

Byron, I tuck the OHs towards the inside of the kit, the right being positioned over the middle of the floor toms. Same on the left where it catches the small toms, cymbals, hh, chimes bells n blox.
Isually and based on sound guys advice, i kept the snare/toms "hot", the kick punchy so i could feel it, for a big space. Id tamp everything down in a smaller room, and adjust my personal dynamics. Maybe some screens in front a bit?
