So I thought I'd appease the music gods by writing a song in honor of writing songs... in hopes of getting my mojo back.
I was watching an interview with a motown producer and he said, "Thunder on the bottom and pretty in the middle" was what
they aimed for with guys like Curtis Mayfield..... I tried to experiment with that concept. Also tried to give it more of a feel like you were using old equipment and maybe standing in the room while the band recorded all together, with headphones on of course...

For inspiration I went and bought my first bass...
http://www.guitarcenter.com/Ibanez-SR30 ... 1440401.gc
LOL So this is all live stuff, the only keyboard is the organ and strings.

Excuse some of notes in the back ups, I just couldnt get up to where I needed to be and pitching sounded like chipmunks.... :)

So here's to my mojo showing up soon,

LOVE SONG FOR A LOVE SONG

I think you have your mojo back! I liked this tune a lot. The intro was very catchy, with the cool guitar riff and organ and it grabbed me right away. I was reminded a bit of Todd Rundgren ( from his Something / Anything period ) while listening. I think the song has a power-pop rock groove with that splash of motown, in the arrangement. The recording also has a nice relaxed live feel to it, which I think you were going for.

Nice stuff! I liked it a lot.

Tasty chords. Nice stereo image. I liked how the organ and strings fit together in the middle but thought they were a bit overpowering towards the end. Also liked the guitar playing the 4th or 5th below root notes. Very cool.

HI all,
Thanks for the comments... I'll revisit the string and organ mix..I intended for them to get a little bigger towards the end, but maybe too big!

As for the guitar stuff, it's a drop D tuning with a suspended kinda move... and the chorus is something like..G6 F6 C9 if I remember right... So with the drop D tuning, index finger is on the 5th fret, low e string.... and your pinkie is on the 9th fret A- string.. No other notes.

I had quite a fight with the bass. The kick drum had a really loose head and a bit of the room in the recording, I loved it, but the bass didn't! Aaaand, I don't have the best bass! LOL...but in the end I got them to atleast not punch each other in the face...they're still not best friends...

Cheers! I'm off for french fries, I'm starving.

Sorry for the slow git back......kinda thinking from about 2:00 on it's gets up there and overpowers the vocals a bit. I might have mixed it lower till around 2:46 then up some

Just sayin.......

Hi,

just listened to the song ...

Beer, you are back in buisiness. Great! =D> =D> =D>
Listened with headphones and got the feeling to be on stage with some musicians.
I love the clear mix with the harmonic vocals panned very clear and a rough guitar cutting through the mix without being too loud. The hookline is fantastic and your decent bass playing is working great for the song.

Arrangement did not let me be tired, always watched for details. Sometimes got a feeling I listened to an old D. Bowie live performance!

Enjoyed to listen to your song
Andreas

I listened with your idea in mind and think you are right on Geno. Great suggestion.

Good track Ivan. Got more coming - now the mojo is working?

I've been sitting in with a different band and it's been fun. My studio is annoying me though and I don't like it right now. I have to unplug everything and re-do the place. It's too hard to record right now in there...plug..un plug..plug..unplug...oieee! I gotta get my patch bay working harder.

I'm feeling more mojo though...

Hey there, Ranch Hand ~

I just happened across your song, and was really glad that I did. It's different, and you have a nice groove going on with it. It's also quite a captivating piece, and very enjoyable to listen to. Personally, I would have liked to have heard your guitar slightly subdued (just a tad bit), and your lead vocal a bit more prominent in the mix (also, just a tad). That's not to say that anything was wrong with the way you have it; it's just what my ears are saying to me :).

Great job, on a good song.
