I have this great looking free Spectrum Analyzer from Voxengo that i can use in Cubase. Helas there is only a very short description of what it does and no explaination of how to use it. While i go searching the net i was wondering if anyone could tell me in short what i should look for in such a tool.

There are quite a few spectrum analysers out there, it`s basically so you can assess visually which frequencies are giving you problems, personally I prefer to do that using my ears, but they can be a good tool.
Another way is to use a narrow eq band and boost it about 12 db`s, sweep across the frequencies and those that jump out at you, pull the band down to -3 or 4 db`s.
The only thing the Voxengo Span does is give you visual info, it can`t affect the sound.

Not sure if SPAN will do this, but some analyzers can save screenshots of various frequency graphs so you can compare them and see which freqs are battling/masking each other... That would be a good reason to use it if it does have the capability...

A very good example of the capability I was talking about in the above post would be by the company Blue Cat Audio...I use an old version of FreqAnalystMulti (got it from a friend for free a few years ago); the new version is a bit expensive.

Thanks Bok. I'm gonna compare songs that i really like with my own mixes trying to spot what's different and se if that yields any result ...

Just a word of warning Dirk, it`s very easy to get bogged down in the visual stuff which can lead to all kinds of problems with your mixes, but as long as you remember that ultimately it`s your ears that should decide what`s right and wrong in your tracks you should be fine.
