In about 9 hours I may find myself owning 2 telecasters. I was the first bidder for both guitars 3 days ago + may end up winng both ! If that is the case, I will have to give one away to my brother (her in doors will be most displeased if 2 guitars are delivered). Tele 1 is a 94 MIJ standard. Tele 2 is an 00 MIM nashville. The MIJ is older, probably built better but it is not a string thru body model. On the other hand, the MIM has an extra strat pick-up + looks fantastic.

If I take delivery of both I am a dead man so must choose sight unseen . Any guidance out there ?

God I hope I lose !.

Might begging for forgiveness help?

And an additional "sorry honey, winning them both didn't seem realistic at the time..."

Thanks Robbie but a mea culpa approach would probably result in 1 tele wrapped out my head + the other jammed up my arse! The bollocking I can take....I do not want to have this mistake trotted out every 2 months for the next 30 years. It seems that the statute of limitations is not a concept easily grasped by a lot of wives.

No, I think I will keep this little disaster to myself.
I have just purchased a lump of jewellery for the missus + so she is unlikely to check this month's bank statement so I am confident that I can keep a lid on this.

I have not won yet so there is no need to panic. However, the gits I bid on have not been selling lately and I have won on first bids before.

That is not a good point Andreas... if they're so versatile no-one would need both...

OK but usually I use my left foot as a left foot, and my right foot as a right foot. Probably the same with these guitars - you can use them in a lot of ways but not for everything. I wouldn't know the difference though, as ANY guitar can do more than I can...

No, you won because it's quite obvious you can't live a decent guitar players life without at least two Tele's... :)

Alright Oscar, I'll take your question at face value and leave the marital/morality stuff between you and your wife. 8)

I would tend to pick the MIM Nashville model simply because it would probably be more versatile (had to look at the Dutch guy's post to remember how to spell versatile - oh, the irony). Of course, take my advice with a grain of salt. Playing guitar has been my passion for more than 30 years, but in all that time I think I've only played one tele for about 5 minutes.

Is it possible to pick one and send the other to your brother with the understanding that you could check it out and trade if you like?

there's those who say it ain't a tele if it don't have a string thru 3 saddle bridge.

there's others who say you must have a maple *and* a rosewood neck.

and still others who say you *can't* have too many guitars.

Without even looking I'ld rather have the MIJ one if not damaged in any way.

OK, I have won the MIJ tele. Here it is:
http://cgi.ebay.ca/Used-FENDER-JAPAN-Telecaster-TL-STD-VWH-MIJ_W0QQitemZ280453725403QQcmdZViewItemQQptZGuitar?hash=item414c583cdb

The Nashville tele still has 10 hours to go, so fingers crossed. It is here:
http://cgi.ebay.com/FENDER-NASHVILLE-TELECASTER--DELUXE-SERIES--USED-MINT!!_W0QQitemZ230432708754QQcmdZViewItemQQimsxZ20100208?IMSfp=TL100208183014r27282

Fingers crossed that I lose the Nashville bid.

I think that I will keep the MIJ if I win both bids. I understand that a top loaded bridge is not a bad thing & reckon that a parchment or black pickguard will make it look better. May end up replacing the pick-ups at some stage.

PS. I hope that I attached the links correctly.

Hi Oscar,

congratulation! The MIJ looks really great and clean to my eyes. To be honest I dont like the Nashville so much, but thats a matter of taste. For me a tele must have a butterscotch blond or a white finish, 2 pickups and alder neck. I love the middle position of this!

Oh, I forget, also the 3 saddle bridge is a feature I really enjoy. I used to put some glendale componsated saddles on my AV52-Tele for a perfect intonation. Was not necessary for my chinese Classic Vibe 50s Tele. The brass saddles and string through mounting will give a tele the ultimate twang and the bridge is a important feature to the typical tele sound. It is easy to convert the MIJ to a string through model. Go for it.

Enjoy to become a Tele-Player and best wishes not to win the other auction
Andreas

Wow, I just had a very narrow escape + was outbid 2 minutes from the end.

Nerve wracking stuff....must be more careful in future.

Anyway, I will be happy to have 1 tele again. I love my ESP but have always played a tele in the past.

Geno or Andreas, do you know whether MIJ fenders have truss rods that can be adjusted both ways or are they the old style ? The one I bought is a 94 model

HI Oscar,

seems you are a lucky guy and your wife will not kill you ;-).

The MIJ Tele´s have a normal trussroad, no biflex. From the pictures it seems that trussrod adjustment has to be done at the top of the neck. Be careful, the MIJs needs a metric allen key.

Also most of the US replacement parts will not fit perfect without some work on it!

Hope you will have a lot of fun with your new baby ...

Andreas

Nicely done. Big risk, big payoff. I think you got the better Tele. Made in Japan guitars seem to be a step up from the MIM. Only thing from Japan to be careful of are Toyotas.

Yep. Already checked withe the seller in Japan + he confirms that the volume knob does not get stuck.

FYI. The tele was advertised an MIJ 2008-2009 but it had a 1994-1995 serial number so I assumed that the seller had got it wrong. It turns out that Fender japan have stopped marking their guitars CIJ + reverted back to MIJ. This means that an MIJ with a T serial number could be either from 94 OR 08. Confusing or what. ? I guess the only way to be sure is to take the neck off, which I won't do. This could turn out to be problematic in 20 or so years when the earlier ones become vintage.

Anyway, the thing has been shipped + will arrive soon. Drama over
