Oops, missed this. I'm considering possibilities, LED might be a way to go.

I have the family trained to leave me be when I'm in my cave anyway, so I might bypass the step altogether.

That's my next project... making a recording light just like the one in the pic, from scrap material.

Got the insulation installed Sunday. R-19 in half, then R-21 on the half over the mixing area.

I did not mis-remember; I HATE fiberglas insulation.

Started installing the first course of sheetrock & tape a couple days ago, will spend a day caulking and sealing every seam and opening before the second course, then the same again. The east wall (the only framed wall, staggered-stud, 2 layers of R-19, layers of 1/4" and 1/2" foam, 5/8" T-111 outside, 5/8" rock in) is a whopping 9 & 1/4 inches thick. That's thicker than the exterior walls of the rest of the house...

Instead of rocking the 15-degree deflection wall I covered it with T-111 as well--The texture should help with wave diffusion and I had some left over, so...

...Gonna make my own recording light, like Robbie "suggested". But instead of spending $140 I'm going to rewire and re-word an old "exit" light I found being thrown out on a jobsite. That will be a lot closer to "for free".

I took a quick look at the studio-specific receipts this morning...You don't wanna know...This build is going to cost me a lot--Or a little more...

Ahhh, wait until the studio is ready and you recognize how much free space there is to fill with some new gear ...

Sheetrock is up. There is not a square corner in this room. I suppose that can be a "good" thing for breaking up transient waves and such but is a real drag when measuring cuts.

Anyway, ceiling is almost two inches thick, alternating layers of sheetrock and 1/4" fanfold foam. Had to use 3" screws to find the joists on the second layer of rock. NOT a one man operation (thanks Terrin!)...

The southwest corner (business end).

Image

The 9+ inch east wall. A 36" insulated steel door is going in eventually, and maybe two, if I ever become that motivated.

Image

A small logistical problem has arisen; To isolate the ductwork (can be seen in the upper-left corner of the second pic) I was going to seal off the vents and wall it off, using an electric radiator for heat. Considering that the room will be basically airtight, I need to devise some sort of venting. I'm thinking of moving a vent as far away from the work area of the room and design an acoustic "plug" to insert at times I need quiet. I've got it figured out in my head and it seems a simple enough solution, will basically recreate my DIY reflextion filter as a snug-fit vent plug.

There are three weight-bearers coming off that beam, one of them built into the east wall and isolated from the room (as part of the staggered-stud design). The beam is the weak spot in my room. It is in contact with the joists above and there was no cost effective way to isolate it. My only option is to wrap it in foam and sheetrock and try to minimize it's damage to my acoustic environment. Same with the supports...

Oh, and considering that I was told again and again how light boxes in the ceiling are usually the culprit with sound leaking in, I deviously installed mudrings to the boxes with a layer of foam between them and the boxes themselves. They look tight. Every nook and cranny will be caulked and sealed off.

It might seem like I'm on a mission from God to create Dead Silence, but that's not really the case. If you knew the environment here, then what I'm doing would make a lot more sense.

We have four cats, two large dogs, two slightly preteen kids, three telephones, untold tens of creaky joists and rafters and don't forget the plumbing, all conspiring against me and my passion. I finally own a place where I can do somethig about it...

...And with all the doubling and overstuffing and sealing and such, airtight may still be all I get. I don't expect Dead Silence, just quieter...OK, as much quieter as possible.

At least we don't have a railroad yard out back.

The back spasms started up last night. I may have to take a short break... :(

Heh, that reminds me....Back in the late 80s I worked a gub'mint job in Laramie Wyoming, a CDC facility--I think they were going to be researching nasties like anthrax, stuff that the local inhabitants (cattle, specifically) were susceptible to...We spent months sealing labs with the highest-tech epoxy caulking and wall coatings, coat after coat after coat...They would periodically come in and pressurize these labs to see if the rooms were truly airtight...

They never succeeded. I think we worked that facility for a year before they gave up and abandoned the site. Walls were two-tiered cinderblock, a stupid choice of substrate in the first place, and I think we had a dozen coats of very expensive block-fills and epoxies on those walls before they gave up.

I won't be quite so tenacious on this project.

 You Probably don't believe this but i have 39 power outlets in my little room and sometimes i am experimenting with so much stuff that i'm still short. At this point i count 23 devices needing power and i haven't plug in my BOSS br or my electric guitar yet. I guess playing acoustic guitar is great for the environment...

Other than acoustic treatment I am done for the moment. I have a wall yet to install, but I need to get started on my wife's office (another in a series of gut-&-rebuilds).

Obviously I started hauling gear down. I've also set the 1600 up temporarily and played a few CDs to "hear" the room...Gonna need some bass traps and stuff, pretty seriously. Room sounds really hollow. Then, it ain't really "done" done, is it... :)

Yeah Mac, I'm with ya there. Actually you can make the pole acoustically sound. Here's a studio that did just that by adding select treatment to the pole. You might want to consider the same thing.

You shoulda just sound proofed the family! :) Then your studio would be quiet with no $$$$, just duct tape. But it does have a nasty habit of sticky to fur a little too much! AHAHAHA!
