I've got my AW16G and I'm very slowly getting to grips with the complexities and quirks but I'm starting to wonder whether I should really replace it with the AW1600. In particular the USB option seems a handy feature but I'm sure there must be other things too...

Can anyone explain the practical differences in simple terms? As opposed to the usual marketing hype and promotional rubbish, what are the differences when each machine is put to normal use by an enthusiastic amateur?

Thanks

The primary differences are th fact that you get 8 universal jacks that can either be unbalanced 1/4" or XLR. On the 16G you only get 2 XLR inputs with phantom power.

The other primary difference is the fact that you get the USB.

Other than that, the look is the same, the feel is a little different.

Don't forget 24 bit recording.

Yeah, the more I consider it, the more I would really love to upgrade, I think having USB at this point we make me so much more productive, and to have PC-DAW access to 24bit tracks has got to be AWESOME.

Limited to 8 tracks of playback in 24 bit mode, if I recall.

On the software side there seem to be two other things to consider. First is a pitch correction program, for what that's worth. The second is that the pad recording section features grid recording. You can place pad events on particular measure/beats in a grid (much like grid programming a drum machine). I bet if you intended to use the pads to trigger rhythm patterns this would be a nice feature.

The usefulness of the USB cannot be underestimated. I'm backing up my G as we speak and there's no swapping of CD's involved.

These haven't been mentioned...
1) I mentioned in another post. The Reverse function has been removed on the 1600 on the sample pads.
2) The optical out is Coaxial not Toslink any more.

I used the Pitch Correction on my voice on a song I wrote http://www.robhynes.co.uk/mp3/RobHynes- ... yKnows.mp3
It works ok in certain situations but it's not brilliant. Plus it works during bounce only and not as you're recording.
In this song I turned it to MAX and went for the Cher effect! (The one she used on "Believe"). I haven't gotten good results when I've tried to use it to tighten up a vocal performance.

Well, I guess that's why they charge you the price of another G if you buy a Voiceworks.

The Voiceworks is nowhere near perfect for on-the-fly pitch correction... but it does a quite solid job.

I was always wondering if the G could do the job in an equally Ok-way... but I guess all the tech involved has its price...!

Thanks for clearing that up for me  .

dont forget you've got gating AND compression on each track of the 1600, rather than gating/compression/expansion/ducking on the G

I thought the two machines were identical in this respect. (?????)

On the G you had gate OR expander OR compander (compressor and expander) OR compressor OR ducking. Same as the AW1600 ???

I am trying to purchase a cable for the digital out of my AW1600 into my Edirol UA-25 digital input but seem to have hit the wall after trying 2 types that Jaycar put upon me. Can this be done with a single lead, as the last salesman at Jaycar grabbed a handful of things, including a converter, a power pack and cables galore and said this will do it.......$$$$...:-(
Anybody up with a solution?????
