Hi folks,
Long time since I've been here. Can't even remember what I called myself. Probably something suitably cheesy!! :D
I had a G back when they first came out and although I used it quite a bit, I had to sell it to raise some cash.
I remember the few quirks and the various workarounds we came up with and I must admit , even listening back now, there was something about the sound of the G that was great.

If you don't mind, a few questions...
A 2nd hand AW1600 has come up for €400 incl flight case. How's the price??
He has no CD. What is on it ?
I see the OS Updater V1.13 is available but can I restore and/or update the 1600 without the disc?
Anyone using it to control Cubase or any other DAW? If so, how is it? I seem to remember the G was just mutes and faders.

Lastly, I presume it's as good if not better than the G.?
Anything to check and watch out for as I'll be test-driving at the weekend?

Thanks for taking the time to read and all replies gratefully received.

No, not cheesegrate(r)fully Robbie!!!

Cheers

Simon

Hi Simon,

Welcome back ! I don't think we talked before. I'm a G owner so i won't be of much use to you but i know a couple of guys who will come in shortly and help you out.

Let us hear from you if you know what i mean ...

P.S. i read the 1600 has USB so maybe you don't really need the CD ?

Greetings and welcome back. The 1600 is pretty much the G with the exception of a USB, 40gb hard drive and auto pitch correction. The USB is a grand addition for transferring files and backups to your computer. Of course a 40 gig drive is double to storage on the G. The pitch correction is nothing I've used so I can't comment.

As for price, that sounds a bit high, but not out of line including the road case. If you don't need the case, you should be able to save 100 quid or so. I've seen them here in the states selling for as low as $300 on ebay. But then again, I just saw one go for $500usd with road case.

Good luck.

You can do an AW1600 OS update using USB.

I wouldn't worry much about no owner's CD. Most of what you'd need from it is probably on this site (USB driver, MIDI remote templates, etc.). If not, I have my CD and can email you the files.

Operationally, the AW1600 is almost identical to the G.

I have a G, and then I added a 1600. The others have touched on the key feature differences. The USB feature, makes moving files back and forth from the PC.....a dream.

I've never used the pitch correction, or used the 1600 as a controller for Cubase, etc.

If you're familiar with the 16G, you'll find using the 1600 easy....as it basically works exactly the same way for the most part.

I bought my 1600 used, for just under $475 Cnd, about 18 months ago. That was a fair price, but not the lowest price I'd seen from other sellers ( which was $400 - $450 range ). However, it was local....and I was able to drive over to the sellers, and check it out to see if it worked, before purchasing it. So, I didn't mind spending a few extra dollars for that piece of mind.

Hi and welcome,
just to add that you can use the aw1600 as a controller for cubase or another daw.
Good luck.

he he.. Haven't a clue what I was called. I can tell you one thing - there's no way I would have used my real name.
First forum I ever joined and I remember spending ages trying to word myself correctly before I posted !!
Scary people you were :D

I really appreciate all the replies.
Seller has found the CD so no worries there. Also, the panic is off now as we aren't meeting till next weekend.
So, I've time to browse a bit.

USB and the 8 combi's are cool.
Still a 12 channel mixer but is there some change as regards the onboard compressor? I read something in a thread but it was unclear!
Seems nothing has changed regards DAW remote control. Pity as assigning those other buttons would be very handy.

Swapping out the HDD looks a bit hit and miss or is there a tried and trusted way?

Thanks again folks.

Off to use "search"

Yes only a 12 channel mixer, but don`t forget that 4 of them are dedicated stereo pairs !!
So the way I look at it is, if there was 16 faders, chances are you would need stereo pairs anyway for maybe keyboards, drums etc.
Also if you do a mixdown to stereo track, you can copy, paste or move the mixed down track to a dedicated stereo track, say 15/16 and then move all your other faders virtual tracks up one giving you another 8 mono and three stereo tracks to play with.
Stay lucky.

good purchase. You will be having fun in no time. Ask lots of questions here - often quicker than mining the manual.

Some years back I ate chicken that was not completely well done. What happened hours after that, I'm pretty sure you don't want me to share. But I've had my share of Simon Ella. :)
