Thats some good introductory stuff.

A few related tips I have picked up regarding the use of compression. These are not rules by any means and as always if it sound good then use it!

Compressors are like preamps.

1. Some are very clean and are designed to be very transpearent. They simply raise the lower sound levels and decrease the higher sound levels the FMR RNC is one that is highly valued for this at a good price.

2. Some are known for imparting "color" to a signal and are far from nuetral. Many loud sources such as drums and electric guitars benefit from colored compressors especially in rock music. Joe Meek, Universal Audio LA series and many others from the 60's are coveted for the character they add as an "effect" more than the actual traditional compression function. often these are tube compressors although not always.

3. Most digital samples and emulations (some synths, most drum machines) are heavily compressed already. Use compression here with caution and usually during mixing rather than tracking and use low ratios unless you are using duplicate tracks with one uncompressed and one compressed and blended behind the uncompressed one.

4. Limiters are a specific type of compressing with a high ratio and a high threshold. The idea here is to allow alot of dynamics up to an adustable "brick wall" over wich nothing passes. These are excellent for tracking as they can leave you some dynamics and assure that you don't clip your signal. Properly set they draw a line in the sand and let the out going sound levels go to a certian point and then absolutely no higher. Some units only do one or the other and some units are capable of both depending on how you set them up.
