Installed a gobo today and recorded some stuff with some lower end Blue mics. The drum screen really helps keep the noise down and the piano sounds a lot better with this setup. More later on how to tie two boom mic stands together to make a very rigid truss.

just got a new knabe 48" upright. its really great in many respects. light years better than the old baldwin acrosonic spinet i had before.

problem exists at the bass treble break, specifically the first key (Eb3), where it goes from 2 wound bass strings to 3 bare treble strings. not good.

i've nicknamed this key vaboom (after the character from the old popeye cartoon that walks up to mountains and VABOOM....see ya later mountain). in addition to not being in balance volume wise, it has bad tone, like you're hitting a wall or something. thunk. not good.

i'm afraid at this point that its just the nature of the beast and cannot be cured. piano tech came here. voiced it, its still terrible. the thing is, the rest of the piano's pretty sweet. any thoughts?????

Yeah other than student use , spinet pianos are of little use IMO. Sounds like your tech either didn't know how to fix it or he just didn't want to bother with it. I always have one or two issues for my tech to look at when it is tuned. It's just now settled into it's new environment and I keep it humidified and covered when not in use. Because it is my most valuable instrument , I fuss over it obsessively. He got a little irritated the last time he was here when I made him redo the stretch on the bass side. It was just too flat around C2 and lower.

You may just have a string that's not setting on the bridge right or the hammer felt action needs attention. I'ld get a new tech.

That's what I have in my living room right now - free from the parents when they moved a few years back. It's a piece of junk, but it's what I got so I ain't complaining.

And yes, this thread reaffirms what we already knew - Sharon really loves Geno. 8)

And, judging by the optical properties of the panels, she loves to see him!

funny enough, we have an old baldwin spinit in our family room. matt's piano teacher put us in touch with a family who needed more room so we got for free. it works great for matt. he has to pass by it to get to the kitchen or go outside so he can't seem to resist playing it.

I think pianos are great to have around if you've got young ones. :)

I agree, Bob. Our daughter took lessons for a few years, but gave it up in favor of more dance classes.

We mentioned piano lessons to our son last week. He said he wasn't interested, but without warning he wandered off and played with the piano 15 minutes later. Hasn't done that in months. :)

I suspect we'll get him started after the holidays.

thanks msg and everyone.

imo the piano is the most user friendly instrument around for beginners. young and old. if you love music, and you want to make some music, i say give one a whirl.

will talk to tech about your thoughts msg. am surprised and bummed that such a nice sounding piano (the rest of it) can have such a lousy key (and at such an important point).

if any other ideas come to anyone, i'm all ears.
