Yesterday was doctor day.

Today I once again raid Banjo Center




Sharon is not quite aware yet of my studio's incursion into the dining room.




The Bluebird , Reflexion , and Auralex mic stand foam kit.





Rode NT1 w/ Aurolex foam mic stand kit parts




Different angle of the bluebird pointed at the lid.




They didn't have the Universal Electronics 2-610 preamp. However they did have 2 of the single channel 110's with the 610 all tube pres. Man these things WARM up any mic. Toasty gain. I A/B ed them with the Avalon series and I thought the UA sounded better IMO. Not too bad of a price as BJ Center knocked off $300 off sticker and $100 rebate made things sweater along with the Aurolex mic foam kit thrown in and no tax.

This looks really cool. I wish I had the money to buy a grand (I suppose name and price don't meet in this case ). Come to think of it, I wish I had the money to buy a house where to put that grand. first things first, you know, although I could use the grand as a dining table.

I talked her into getting rid of the dining room table that we only ate at during Thanksgiving and Christmas. We eat in the breakfast nook now.

Thanks Rob , I am up to 115 lbs now and gaing a pound about every two days. They say at least 6 months to a year before I'll be as I was before I got sick. I still have the DVT in the left leg, I feel better than I have in over a year now. Better than being 83 lbs with feeding tubes and IV feeding,

That's an interesting grand piano mic'ing scenario.

Does that produce an even stereo sound, with 1 mic over the lower register and another off axis?

I have seen good results with having 1 mic towards on the lower register and the other on the higher register.

Looking forward to hearing the results - either way.

The one time I mic'd a grand, I X/Y'd small condensors centered above the hammers, and a single large condensor at the back pointing at the sound board about a 1/3 of the way from the back. Turned out beautiful. Too, I was in a huge space so reflections wheren't a problem.

Still experimanting Dave. Come to find out I had the output line/mic switches incorrectly set to mic on the UA Prees. Flipped 'em to line and had to turn the preamp gain knobs down to about 1/3 to keep from blowin the G out. My Baby Bottle came in today so I will put it where the Rode is. Next setup will be to open the lid to about 70mm , let the Bluebird peek over the edge of the rear vertical curve (lower it from where it is now) . The the Baby Bottle will be placed near the bridge at about C3 aimed towards C2. Fairly hard panning should give a good image. Depending on how much hammer noise is present will also affect placement.

Cinda, this scenerio pictured works VERY well. The problem is the piano is stuck on one side of a large room. Also the recordings of the instrument are darker than it really is. I'm sure its a combination of prox. effect on the Rode , the room , and the lid all the way up are factors. It actually sounds pretty good with the Bluebird pointed at the reflection off the fully open lid by itself but of course its not stereo. In a busy mix I sometimes mic the piano mono and set it off to one side.

Plan Q is to go back the tried and true PZM mics with the lid closed. One taped to the bottom , the other taped underneath the lid. This is pretty much what I have done in the past.

These experiments were primarily to learn how to use the Blue mics and also the nuances of the Universal Audio preamps.

Well the first setup sounded better IMO. I gotta move 'em around a little more. Actually to me the Rode sounded better than the Bottle mic. on the bass side. I recorded the same passage on separate tracks on the G so I could compare. I wound up turning the tube gain all the way up on the UA Pres and playing a very distorted piano version of Sunshine of Your Love.

I had the piano tuned last week so I gotta get this all ironed out before it does flat.



Tomorrow ? PZM's with the same Pre amps.
