How about 8 DX7's at once.

Yamaha TX816

Just think of the possibilities ........... 20 years ago.

1 TX816 + an 8 channel mixer , a full time programmer = 8 voices at once in a synth! (most of my modern stuff has 25-75 voices at once in one rack space)

O well it's vintage cool anyway.

I have a DX7 but rack space in the studio for the TX816 and a dedicated 8 channel mixer? .............uhhhhhh no. Still it would be fun to play with ad program with a software editor. It could be programmed with a DX7 but that would take up a lot more time.

I still have my "old" DX7 and recently put it in a new two-tiered rack. [got rid of the A-frame rack and gained about 5 feet more of studio space]

The battery in the DX7 was right up to 2.8 and it's been sitting in its box for a couple of years. And, in total, the DX7 is about 18 years old. Amazing and sturdy keyboard but, of course, the newer synths have better patches.

But, I like using the DX for parts of songs. It has a good dirty sax patch that I got somewhere. I also have a few cartridges with all kinds of patches.

Thank you for your kind words..........My late buddy Don really helped me demystify my DX-7. He bought his after it was a loaner to Steve Winwood doing a concert in his home town. It still had Steves patches in it. It was cool to see how the patches were built. The old DX is stiil ahead in some areas. I also have a Roland D-50. I find it much easier to program than the DX and some patches are almost identical between them. Long live multi operator FM synthesis !

I've never understood how synths work - never quite getting the additive, subtractive, granular or FM and the like tone generations. Disnae matter - I feckin' love how they sound

Geno: I don't know what synths you have considered for your Sonar set-up, but I have the FM7 & FM8 from the Native Instrument Komplete suites I've used from V2 and soon to add V5. What I do know is that the FM7 will accommodate every DX pre-set from the DX100 to the humongous TX816 with all points in between. More sounds than I ever know what to do with to be honest, but as a pre-set bitch it suits me down to the ground

Have you had a chance to have a go with the NI trial versions?

No Lys my friend , I have not received my Sonar 6 software yet. From what I've read it is a bitch to learn. I'm anxious to program some stuff up. Still lookin fer that perfect controller. The M-audios and Korgs are so cheesy and plastic. Looks like a choice between an Endirol or a CME (whch is made by Yamaha). 88 key controllers in this category ain't cheap. Jeeze the hardware for going software is already wearin me out.
